The Washington Commanders have broken off negotiations with quarterback Kirk Cousins, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

No further talks are scheduled, the source told Schefter. Another source recently told ESPN that the two sides were not close in earlier discussions and that the gap had not been closed in the ensuing weeks.

The source also told Schefter it's not a foregone conclusion that the Commanders would use the franchise tag on Cousins. Teams have until March 1 to apply the franchise tag.

The Commanders have expressed a desire to sign Cousins to a long-term deal, but they've also made it clear privately that they would only do so at the right price. If they placed the franchise tag on Cousins, it would cost them approximately $20 million for a one-year contract, based on current projections.

If Cousins hit the open market, he would do so as one of the more attractive options to teams needing a quarterback. But it's uncertain what sort of deal that would produce for him, as he's started only 25 regular-season games in his career. He's coming off his best season, and also his first full season as the starter, having thrown 29 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.

Wouldn't suprise me if they moved up to get a qb this draft if that's the situation.

I don't think they'll move up to draft a QB. But if a guy is high on their board they won't and they are on the clock, they likely won't pass him up.

I'm pretty confident Kirk will be franchised and I'm ok with that. It's a win-win for both parties. He proves 2015 wasn't a fluke, and the Commanders feel more confident paying him a major long term deal.

Vet min plus incentives - no franchise tag.

Whats the tag this year for a QB. Pretty hefty usually

I think there best bet is to try and get him on a Kaepernick type deal to where of it works out he gets paid handsomely and if it it doesnt ots easy to move on.

He may not be interested in that however. Another good year and he is looking at 20+ per

I was going to suggest it until you posted that. Now I feel anxious and insecure.

It must be micro-aggression! I am going to my safe place to color. Where are my crayons?

I don't think anyone will do that deal again. Kap was being loyal to the Niners and hoping that they would use some of his money he left on the table to sign some of their FA but it didn't happen. Kap got screwed compare to other qbs. If Cousin and his agent were smart they would not do that deal. Need to strike when the iron is hot.

Peculiar situation the Commanders have in regards to Cousins. The guy was on the verge of being benched until midway through last season when everything clicked for him. The Commanders now have to ask themselves if he is the next Nick Foles. Regardless, they will probably be best to sign him to a Nick Foles type deal. Pay him handsomely for a 2 year deal (Nick Foles signed a 2 year, $24,540,000 contract with the St. Louis Rams, including a $3,000,000 signing bonus, $13,792,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $12,270,000(spotrac).) versus giving him a huge extension.

But they may not work from Cousins prospective, he can get a huge extension on the open market or just hold out for the Commanders to either franchise tag him or give him a huge extension. Regardless, I would be wary to resign him if I was Commanders management until he proves he can put up a top 10 performance over the duration of a season.

Heck yeah. And I bet a humble farmer mentality guy like Cousins can be talked into something reasonable. He knows we have many other needs to address to get the Lombardi - and he will give us a huge loyalty discount for giving him a chance.

Personally I think his best bet is to take a tag. He is looking at 15 to 16 per this year. He repeats 2015 and he is nearing or over 20 per as he 1) has proven not to be a fluke 2) The price goes up. Especially if Osweiler hits the open market

Doubt it. If he was willing to accept a bargain, it would likely be done by now. At the QB position, you rarely ever see true bargains. Brady is signed at a bargain but he has a wife that makes way more than him. In regards to Kaep contract, at the time...he was making huge money from endorsements so it made some sense. You got to figure, these agents that are working these contracts aren't loyal---they are trying to make the most money possible.

We will see, regardless...it's not good news for the Commanders to go long term with high guarantees with Cousins right now. You see QB's get on a hot streak too much in the NFL...Eagle fans were convinced Foles was the real deal after his ridiculous, record breaking half a season. It's probably best for both parties to do something short term or use the franchise tag.

I would die laughing if Cousin was let go to FA because Snyder wants RG3 to start.

Oh, a coronary I would be a havin'
