So last night I was talking to someone from the Cowboys via e-mail.

I asked this...

The reports of what we were offered by the Bengals for Martellus Bennett are all over the place. I have heard a 1st. That supposedly by Bill Rogers who works for Steve Dennis. I have heard a 2nd. That was by Calvin Watkins I believe. I have heard a 4th and Chris Henry. What is the truth?

This was the reply I got...

At the time we talked about a 1st. But we didn't want to do that.

Okay, now this is the very first time I have ever heard this. Naturally I asked why. The response was direct and at the same time leaves a question hanging.

Just didn't want to let him go at that time.

I leave you to draw your own conclusions. We did talk to the Bengals about their 1st round pick. I absolutely trust this man. The question left hanging is is "at that time?" Then what about if we were offered something now? I haven't asked yet. If I do I might not post the answer because if the media got hold of it, it could cause a mess to the team.

Not to doubt Hos' source, but "talked about a first", doesn't equal being offered a first. The Cowboys likely decided they would except nothing less than a first, and the Bengals were probably mildly interested, but I doubt they ever came out and said the deal for a first is on the table.

lol, ok.. I see that no one can stand Martellus any more, which with all the hate in Marty B's world right now will really motivate him and we'll see a major beast out there next season.. I think he is one of those players that might need a chip on their shoulder to finally realize what he has to get done.. I don't like those kind of players though, they should be busting their butt every day

I agree. Witten is the only TE in the NFL I wouldn't give up for a first round pick. Especially considering that a draft pick at this point is no less proven than Bennett.

If we had an extra first rounder we could have turned it into that slot receiver we have been missing or a starting OL.

Oh well, could shoulda woulda well get you nowhere. I would be surprised if Bennett isn't moved on draft day.

Thanks for the info Hos.

Wow I'm just baffled at the thought of not taking a first. The dude is going to be a lifetime backup TE here. Not to mention annoying.

Imagine if we had another first this year. Would anyone be missing Martellus?

I don't want a player who has to be inspired by others not liking him to play well. I want a player, especially at a position like TE, who has the heart and desire to be a football player and help this team without being poked and prodded.

Phillips took Bennett's job. I don't think there is any chance of Bennett starting for this team fulltime next season unless he has a total attitude make-over.

Honestly, I'd wait till next season to draw conclusions on he and Roy.

You watch the Superbowl, you see the Saints split Shockey wide and throw him a slant at the goal line. Then you say to yourself, "why don't we do that with Bennett?" We split him out wide a lot all season long, to create favorable matchups, but usually a corner went out wide with him. We didn't throw one slant to him for the first part of the season, then threw one to him in a game in the middle of the season; ofcourse, he dropped the ball.

But the main thing here is, we have to instill some confidence in those guys as much as they have to show us something. Let's not act like it's all on them. So we tried lobbing balls to Bennett in the end zone twice in the first 3 games and then benched the idea the rest of the season? You're gonna tell me that a guy with this freakish athletic ability couldn't have been of use to us in the end zone?

It was just in December that Roy had a monster game against the Giants and could've had an even bigger one, and we might've made a come back, if Romo didn't overthrow him when he was wide open on a slant and go in the 4th. He also had another good game against Philly at the end. Yet, we only remember him not catching a ball in the Minnesota game and the numbers he finished with.

All I'm saying is that it's an all inclusive process.

lol I agree with you.. and slate, I mean you can call Bennett a 5th-6th option on this team but Bennett isn't a backup to be honest with you.. I guess in TE terms he is #2, but he plays a ton of snaps & does a lot of good things forming holes. I am not trying to take up for the guy b/c I can't stand him either but I have to give credit on some of the things he does well

We get the same production from Phillips. Blocking and catching wise.

Theebs was right.

I was leaning his way from the start simply because the dude takes notice of what's going on.

Didn't he call Ware's extension before it happened based on Jerry having a pre-game talk with him?

This year, yeah he did.. Give it another year though, I think you might be happy

Man that 21st pick looks really nice.

Just bad business to pass on that trade.

exactly, you take the first when offered. THis should have been a no brainer. We knew what we had in Philips and we knew he was serviceable, maybe not wonderful, but gave us more production than Bennett. Would have been worth it.

Save it.

Dallas does not need an All World backup TE.

No team needs that. Phillips is more than capable and whatever Bennett provides above and beyond that is not worth a 1st round pick.

Confusing. Who dangled the idea of a first round pick? Us or them? I find it hard to believe that Cincy would start the negotiations with such a high offer.
