Read closer.

The guy is speculating that the cowboys COULD have interest in this guy.

I see nothing that says the Cowboys DO have interest in this guy.

The writer isn't even that bold. He's reporting that someone else is speculating that the Cowboys and Jets might have interest.

it just has the gears turning in my head, I mean where could these league sources be getting these indications from? I'm pretty sure it won't happen, just curious as to what those are

I know Jerry is changing, but I'm just not really sure of the guy yet

I think it's a recent trend of sports 'journalists'.

They play connect-the-dots and throw something out there to see if it sticks.

1) The Cowboys just released Owens and have an opening at receiver

+

2) The Jaguars just released receiver Matt Jones

+

3) Jerry Jones went to Arkansas

+

4) Matt Jones went to Arkansas

=

Jerry Jones must want Matt Jones in Dallas

And if not, their story will be forgotten in a week or two anyway - no harm done.

But if they're right, they can build their reputation as an insider and boost their own image.

I have come to the conclusion that journalism is dead. Anybody with an URL can post whatever in the hell they want, whether true or not, and nothing will ever happen to them.

Then it will show up on some message board, further perpetuating the falsehood. This disgusts me.

Not happening. Just garbage his agent is probably getting put out without just naming the Cowboys so it looks like his client has options. Only options he has right now is what attorney he will be retaining. I don't want to hear about this clown ever again.

For some reason the NFL's substance abuse program isn't picking up what's in his system either. What a crock this substance testing is, the league should truly be embaressed ad that should be the real story here. Not where this junkie will be playing next.

I think the aerticle below is more realistic in this matter because at least it comes from an insider's perspective (i.e. from DC.com):

Going For Big Catch
Despite Comments, History Suggest Another WR Move

IRVING, Texas - He's been asked several times and so far, the answer hasn't changed.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones hasn't had many press conferences or media briefings of late, but all of them have had included one constant answer regarding the team's wide receiver position.

For now, Jones says the team is standing pat, meaning adding another high-profile receiver to the mix is very unlikely. It sounds like the Cowboys are not only ready to build the receiving corps around Roy Williams, but they are counting heavily on Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, Sam Hurd and Isaiah Stanback to carry the load now that Terrell Owens has been released.

With that, it means a big no to the free-agent receivers on the market, such as Torry Holt or Marvin Harrison, or even some middle-of-the-road guys like Joe Jurevicius and Justin McCarins.

And yes, that probably means the Cowboys would not have interest in signing Matt Jones, a former first-round pick who was recently cut by the Jaguars for his off-the-field troubles.

Now Matt Jones' availability might cause the Cowboys' owner to rethink his stance on adding a free-agent receiver. After all, Matt Jones, the former Arkansas quarterback, became a big hit in the 2005 Draft after he ran a sizzling 4.3 40 time at the scouting combine and his impressive Senior Bowl practices where he first tried his hand at wide receiver.

[As an aside to this article: I'll bet the paragraph above is the "mystery, speculative source" that gave enough credence to the shmuck who wrote that vague report in the first post of this thread. Talk about journalustic nonsense!]

But in his four seasons with the Jags, Jones hasn't lived up to high expectations, catching just 15 touchdowns in four seasons. This past season, Jones had career highs in catches (65) and receiving yards (761), but the Jaguars were obviously looking for more production from their first-round investment. To make things worse, he's had too many run-ins with the law, including a recent probation violation from a drug charge that still looms over Jones here in the next few months. Undoubtedly, Jones will face an NFL suspension if and when he signs with a team.

While the Cowboys highly considered drafting Jones back in 2005 when they held the 20th overall pick, they opted for defense, with the club trying to move to the 3-4 scheme. After they had already taken DeMarcus Ware with the 11th pick, the Cowboys took LSU's Marcus Spears at No. 20. Jones went to the Jaguars with the 21st pick.

In the past, adding a player like Jones, not only with his straight-line speed and unleashed talent, but his Arkansas ties, would make it an easy call for the Cowboys.

But it doesn't exactly go along with the team's recent movement to distance itself from players such as Pacman Jones and Owens, who were both released this off-season. The Cowboys are not expected to retain Tank Johnson, an unrestricted free agent.

While Pacman Jones and Johnson have had several run-ins with the law, Owens' problems apparently were more locker-room related. However, the result has been the same.

So adding Matt Jones, who still has legal troubles to resolve, doesn't exactly make sense.

But if it's not Jones, history still suggests the Cowboys might try and make some kind of receiver splash.

Despite Jerry Jones' recent comments that the younger receivers will have to step up, it's not often that the Cowboys haven't had two big-name receivers on the roster. And that dates back to the early-Jones regime of the 1990's when the team drafted Alvin Harper in the first round, to go along with Michael Irvin.

Harper left in 1995 for free agency, and the Cowboys did try a committee approach the following two seasons with Kevin Williams manning the No. 2 spot. Then again, the Cowboys did start Deion Sanders at receiver for half of the 1996 season.

The following season, Jones went out to find a solid No. 2 to line up opposite of Irvin. His first choice was Anthony Miller, who was near the end of his career, but still had track-star speed. Miller played just one season in 1997, catching 46 passes for 645 yards and four touchdowns.

With the Miller experiment considered a failure, the Cowboys did try once more to groom younger receivers as the No. 2. Although the club did sign veteran Ernie Mills, who had played in Chan Gailey's system before in Pittsburgh, it was Billy Davis who started most of the games that season, catching just 39 passes for 691 yards and three touchdowns.

But the next year is when the Cowboys started to put more emphasis on a second receiver, although injuries for three straight seasons hampered those ideas.

In 1999, the Cowboys signed both Rocket Ismail and James McKnight in the off-season. McKnight suffered a season-ending knee injury before training camp even started. Ismail made a rousing debut against Washington, with his game-winning 76-yard touchdown in overtime.

But four games into the season, Irvin went down with a neck injury that would eventually end his career. Just like that, the Cowboys were down to just Ismail, who tried to carry the load with 80 catches for 1,097 yards and six touchdowns. But the second-highest receiver that year was Mills, who had only 325 yards.

That prompted Jerry Jones to spend big the next year. He gave up two No. 1 draft picks to land Joey Galloway from the Seahawks, who eventually picked Koren Robinson and Shaun Alexander with those two selections.

The Cowboys envisioned an explosive offensive tandem of Galloway, Ismail, Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman. But those four players were only the field for about three quarters. Galloway suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first game, while Aikman had three concussions in 2000, which turned out to be his last season.

Galloway eventually returned in 2001, where he had 53 catches to lead the team, one more than Ismail. But that season was marred by four different starting quarterbacks - Quincy Carter, Anthony Wright, Ryan Leaf and Clint Stoerner.

In 2002, the Cowboys drafted the electrifying but troubled receiver Antonio Bryant in the second round and thought they would have a three-headed receiver monster with Galloway and Ismail. But sticking to the theme, Ismail suffered a neck injury after a freak practice-collision with Dat Nguyen. Just like that, Ismail's career was over, too.

Galloway had a 908-yard season in 2002, along with 733 from Bryant.

The next season, with Bill Parcells arriving to the scene, the Cowboys brought in yet another talented speed demon in Terry Glenn, who made an immediate impact. He had 754 receiving yards to lead the team. Galloway had just 672 yards, but ranked at the top of the NFL leaders with a 19.8 average.

But with two speed guys in Galloway and Glenn, the Cowboys traded one for a true possession receiver. Galloway went to Tampa Bay in exchange for Keyshawn Johnson.

And early in the 2004 season, the Cowboys appeared to have their most potent passing attack in years with Bryant, Johnson and Glenn, who had 400 yards in the first six games.

But the injury bug struck again, knocking Glenn out for the year with a foot injury.

Johnson and Glenn both had good seasons in 2005, including 1,136 from Glenn, who teamed up with his former New England quarterback Drew Bledsoe.

In 2006, the Cowboys took the receiver position to a new level, signing Owens to go along with Glenn. Both players thrived, especially once Tony Romo took over as the starter in mid-season. The duo became the first wide receiver tandem to record 1,000-yard receiving seasons in the same year since Drew Pearson and Tony Hill did the feat in 1979.

The 2007 season was supposed to be even better but a knee injury to Glenn in training camp forced him to miss the first 15 games of the regular season. He gingerly returned for the season finale and then the playoff game, but was a non-factor.

The Cowboys were forced to rely on just Owens in 2007, but when it became clear that Glenn wasn't going to return to the team in 2008, the club went looking again.

Just before the trade deadline, they pulled off a deal that sent Roy Williams and a seventh-round pick to Dallas for three 2009 selections, including the Cowboys' first-round pick.

Now that Owens is gone, the Cowboys find themselves with one big name at receiver, surrounded by role players.

Do the Cowboys go as is, with the option of adding a receiver in the middle rounds, but primarily counting on Austin and Crayton to fill Owens' void?

Or will Jerry Jones give in at a later date and sign a veteran receiver to cover themselves?

Going on history, the latter option seems to be the case. Then again, the last month here at Valley Ranch has certainly gone against the grain.

Jerry loves a project, and has an addiction to these boom or bust types. He also love publicity and believes there is no such thing as bad publicity. The Sensabaugh signing should tell you that this could happen.

I don't understand where the Jerry Jones/Arkansas mess came from the last couple of off seasons. I think Dallas has only had 5 players from Arkansas on the roster since Jerry took over as owner with Ken Hamlin and Felix Jones being the latest Razorbacks in Dallas. It is obvious that Jerry doesn't go after every and any player from Arkansas.

Mooty, Jim CB Arkansas 1960
Alworth, Lance WR Arkansas 1971-72
Stoerner, Clint QB Arkansas 2000-02
Brooks, Jermaine DT Arkansas 2003-05
Crowder, Tom WR Arkansas 2004-05
Hamlin, Ken S Arkansas 2007-present
Jones, Felix RB Arkansas 2008-present

I think that is overblown. Plus Jones is not a "boom or bust type". He is an "average player or bust type" and I lean toward the bust. He already has earned the bust label because he was a first round pick that has been cut.

There is zero reasons why the Jerry would bring in a mediocre wr who is one drug bust away from a year long ban.

Those two things put the twinkle right in Jerrys eye.

He gets to rehab a guy from Arkansas

It would be very odd if they were to bring him in.

He is everything that they claim to be cleaning out.

The corner that went to tampa last year, I forget his name was from richardson and hung out with gang members and drug dealers and that is why they stayed away from him.

So to bring in an actual convicted narcotics felon would be odd.
