The situations are a little different. In St. Louis the Rooney rule does not apply to hiring Haslett as a interim coach. But it does apply before the Rams can make him a permanent Head Coach. Since Haslett didn't already have it stipulated in his contract about being the next head coach then he will have to go thru the interview process to which the Rooney Rule would apply.
If Garrett's contract that he just re-signed stipulated that he would be the next head coach when Wade was hired/fired then the Rooney rule would not apply. In Seattle, Jim Mora Jr. has it in his contract that he will be the next head coach when Holmgren retires at the end of the year. In this case, there is no violation of the Rooney Rule.
I like the Rooney Rule, but one change I would like to see is teams being able to promote from within without adhering to the Rooney Rule.
Seattle got around it because Mora is Hispanic (and apparently stipulated it in his contract
). I apologize to you all then, I wasn't aware of this exception to the rule, which makes it even more ridiculous.
Although, I do agree something needed to be done, and this was a step in the right direction, I think the NFL could do a better job of policing itself. A coaching / referee academy run by ex coaches and refs for example to help develop skills and techniques and turn out strong candidates for all coaching jobs (Not just pick and choose from the college ranks). I almost wish the NFL would develop a real farm league like baseball has. I would definitely be a follower.
Any way, thanks for the education
