i don't know if it will make the final cut but i'll contend with my last breath that the original day the earth stood still is the grestest sci-fi movie ever made.
and i miss black and white film in movies....it was an art form.
there are scenes in that film that uses darkness and shadows almost like they were other characters.

I have a lot of respect for your opinion. That was an excellent movie well-ahead of its time. It really upset me how the remake with Keanu Reeves paled in relation to the original.

I hope Star Wars doesn’t get left out due to Empire Strikes back or Aliens because of Alien. Same goes for Raiders of the Lost Ark/Temple of Doom. I think any movie in a franchise should be combined under the first movie

For example,, any SW movie will all be considered just Star Wars
I have not taken a hard look at anyone's ballot list yet. Being a fan of all the franchises you mentioned punches me in the gut because I know how much I have felt for other movies as well.

It is my wish that this tournament thingy continues for awhile. I do want to see a movie franchise tournament at some point.

My recollection could be wrong but I think the 'real' Bishop hinted to experimentation at the end of Alien 3 and actual experimentation occurred in Alien Resurrection. 'The Company' wanted to get their hands on the creatures since the original Alien though.
I can only speak for myself but horror for me is not just visual but most psychological. The best ones 'convince' me that the story being told could be real under the right circumstances.

Now that I think about it some more, it is likely I would have ranked Aliens below Alien if I were forced to consider both as Horror. The original movie had a group of people in a small enclosed space IN space. The enclosed space had so many hiding places for a completely unknown entity to stalk its prey. What would ordinary people do in that situation? They were not even trained soldiers like those in the sequel. My mind is racing about all the different terrifying ways these people would suffer at the hands of the creature.

On the other hand, my heart raced more than my mind with Aliens. For me, I have always leaned towards labeling the movie as a Thriller/Suspense despite its action. The visuals are awesome (classic James Cameron). Even so, visuals are what occupy my eyes. It is the what ifs that grip my mind. That is what Horror means for me.

Slightly related note: Here is an example of how my mind works. This happened the first time I saw John Carpenter's The Thing and I have often repeated the same thing every time I have seen the movie since then.

The fire and light slowly die while watching MacReady and Childs' scene fade to black. All I am left with is the ominous music (superb soundtrack!) playing as the credits start to roll. The FIRST thing that always comes to my mind is that one particular scene at the BEGINNING of the movie. I say to myself the same thing every time...

"The guy in the helicopter was shooting that dog. Every. <Expletive>. Shot."

Why? Even though I know it is complete fiction, the movie and its story is believable to me. And I am left wondering, every time, what would I have done in every situation throughout the movie?
I've never seen that one.

As for Aliens, the people stuck in the goop, seeing the face huggers emerge from the pods, then just waiting to be eaten from the inside, and not being able to do a thing about it....That's absolute horror to me. It's like a spider paralyzing its prey, then eating it alive. I can't think of many worse ways to die.

Not seen what? Do you mean John Carpenter's The Thing?

If true, I would encourage to either rent it in Blu-Ray or find a high quality stream of the movie.

You think an alien bursting out of your gut is something. Well. Watch The Thing and tell me what you think.

And DON'T watch the 2011 prequel of the same name before catching the 1982 classic. Nope. Don't do that. Trust me. Despite lesser quality special effects, 1982 is way better.

I'm not really a horror buff, as a rule. I watched Aliens at first because the monsters were so awesome looking. That's why you may have noticed I had to find 5 Horror movies to add, when I redid my list. I've seen all the ones I listed, but they're far from my favorite movies.

I am both the complete opposite and similar because I love the genre but I am very picky about what IS horror. My horror list would be short as well. My criteria for horror is simple. If I am totally engrossed in it, start to finish, and do not either laugh or talk any time during the movie, it's horror.

I would have put Prophecy in my horror list but most probably never heard of it
The one with the mutated bear?
Yea, I think it was a bear.
I vaguely remember seeing that as a kid. I'm pretty sure it was a grizzly that was exposed to toxic waste, or something like that. I think of it every now and then, so I must've liked it. lol
Oh! I sorta remember that one. Had to IMDB it.

I do remember my reaction though. I lol'd.
