Here's my take on the picks:
Eagles - Derek Barnett - Barnett is a better football player than athlete. He has been very productive at a high college level, playing quite well against SEC competition. If you measure him without pads and in shorts, you will be underwhelmed. If you watch him on tape, you will love the player. He has an all day motor, good hand usage, and pretty solid rush instincts. He's also a very young player as a true junior draft entry. I think he will be a very good DE in a 4-3, and it was a great selection by Philadelphia.
Commanders - Jonathan Allen - Allen, IMO, was the second best player in the draft. I have no specific knowledge as to the extent of his shoulder issues (he hasn't been limited in college), and how this will play out over his career. Allen is a very intelligent player with good leadership skills. He has very strong, heavy hands, and can be effective as a base end on run downs, and kick inside as a 3T on pass downs. Another all day guy in terms of effort. He was productive on a very good defensive line, and is a nasty finisher. One of the absolute steals of the draft who will be a good 5T for the Commanders on run downs and a load on pass downs as an inside rusher.
Giants - Evan Engram - In reality, he's a big slot. Engram will give effort blocking, but he's at best a wall off guy without the lower body strength to move guys off the LOS. He's a freaky athlete who will be a tough matchup on seam and option routes, but with Sterling Shepard and Brandon Marshall in place manning the slot, his effectiveness may not be as great as one might imagine. With Forrest Lamp on the board, I think the Giants erred in not selecting him. I also think that David Njoku presented better potential for an in-line TE, and is 20 years old with his best football in front of him. However, the Giants did have a scheduled private meeting with Njoku that was cancelled, so this could explain their lack of interest when he was available to them.
Cowboys - Taco Charlton - Charlton is a guy who people either seem to love or hate (like almost any Cowboy draft selection). He's a rangy, long athlete who looks a lot like a power forward playing defensive end. His levered strength is pretty good, and he is a good finisher. His production at Michigan improved every year. He is a player with a high floor as a prospect. For those that knock him starting for only one season, he was not a scheme fit for the 3-4 defense that they ran for the majority of his Michigan career. In the 4-3 D run by Don Brown last year, he took a big step forward. Where I have issues with him are two-fold. One, he is not a twitchy player, and is not particularly quick off the ball. Two, a good deal of his production was from the LDE position, and the Cowboys need a RDE prospect. The Cowboys indicate that they will give him a shot at RDE, but I don't know if he is initially quick enough to finish consistently at that position. I don't think that he will bust at all - he will be a solid player in the 6-8 sacks per year range, which for picking 28th is not bad. However, I don't think that he will be a guy who teams need to slide pass protection toward, or be a game wrecker. It's unrealistic to expect this from a guy picked 28th. Were it my draft to run, I would have looked to trade down. Without a good deal, I would have gone for Njoku, as I love his long term potential.
In order of best to worst, I go:
Commanders - Allen
Eagles - Barnett
Cowboys - Charlton
Giants - Engram
