They phased him out for the bum they just cut. They didn't want him so he moved on. He would have stayed had they wanted and used him.

I know this is somewhat morbid, but I'm waiting for the day when a team (not the Cowboys) cuts a big-time player, say an in-his-prime Von Miller, because they got the name wrong or someone with the team thought it would be a good prank, expecting someone to catch it and correct it.
