Drama sure but now you are messing with the history of the league. Think how different the history of this league would be if all PAT's were 42 yard field goals.

Just seems forced, change for the sake of change. I don't see it as necessary.

The game itself presents enough drama and emotion, the league and the tv networks have been doing their best to get in the way of that and create false drama for over a decade or so now.

the game needs to breathe a little and needs the league and the networks to back off.

It could be that the NFL realizes that all they've done in the name of player safety has taken away from the game. Eliminating big hits, protecting QBs, pass interference being called much more strictly. So they have already messed with the history. Imagine the numbers that some of the HOF QBs would be putting up now in the modern age of passing.

So this is a way to bring back some excitement without drastically affecting the game. There will be a few more missed extra points. This will result in a few more 2 point conversions. There will be a new element of the game. I don't think that's a bad thing. Kicking a gimme extra point does nothing for the game.

The powers that be couldn't care less about that.

Goodell thinks all the little changes he's made the last few years have made the game better and more popular when the truth is that he inherited a juggernaut of a league riding such incredible momentum that almost any move wouldn't hurt, at least in the short run.

To paraphrase Barry Switzer, he's the classic guy who was born on third and thinks he hit a triple.

It's an extra 23 yards, not 5. The ball is being PLACED at the 25.

Right and I'm talkng about placing it at the 30 or 35 as opposed to the 25, which would make it substantially less of a sure thing. It's currently being placed at the 20, right? Putting at at the 25 makes it only 5 yards farther.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The only scenario that I thought was reasonable was make a Td 7 points you can go for A conversion to get to 8 but if you miss you go back to 6pts. Losing a game after a 99 yard miracle drive because you missed a 42 yard pat on a windy day is horse crap.

Oops, my bad . . . it's currently being kicked from the two-yard line, rather than the 20. Pardon me while I wipe the egg off my face.

The ball is spotted at the 2 and kicked from the 9. So a 19 yard kick.

Note my correction when I acknowledged that currently, kicks are made at the two instead of the 20. Mea culpa, mea culpa. I wrongly assumed the new proposal was merely a 5-yard change rather than a 23-yard change. I hate it when that happens!

I was actually fine with the proposal of automatically awarding the extra point, with the option to risk that point to go for 2 from the two-yard line. If they want to go this way, that's fine too, but they should make it a distance where the extra point is still converted over 90% of the time. I like the idea of a TD being at least 7 points (and thus more than 2 FGs) the overwhelming majority of the time. I'm thinking move it to something like the 18 yard line, which would be a 35-yard kick.

I'm sure good kickers like Dan Bailey like this proposal, as it would certainly increase the value of having one.

How? The kick is worth one single point. It takes a very short amount of time to do. Why should a kick of 42 yards be worth one point?

how much excitement is there for an NFL fan when they scurry out for the kick that is set up from the 2? move it back like I described and you have some anticipation and it took the same amount of time. When I go on a rollercoaster ride at the park I want lots of fun not dipsy doos that do nothing.

So you need excitement for every single second of the game?

So when you go to a amusement park, you have to park, wait in line to enter, walk up to the rides, wait in line for rides, wait for the people to make sure you are strapped in securely to the ride, etc. It's not excitement 100% of the time. No sport is like that.

With this logic, we should move the free throws in basketball back to halfcourt. That would be exciting, right?

you seem to be getting a little crazy here. Free throws are hit at 78% would be a decent guess. A current xtra point is hit at about 99%, going from a 35 yard LOS would make it about a 90% shot. Spidey...read my 1st comment on the options in this thread. What u think?

This will inevitably lead to more second guessing, so most coaches probably hate the idea.

I actually like this change. Extra points weren't such a sure thing back when most teams had kickers who only made 60% of their field goals. If anything this is just a way to bring back a certain amount of uncertainty to a part of the game that has evolved into a non-event.

I think it's fine the way it is, but I could live with this change a lot easier than getting rid of the extra point. IMO getting rid of it's an awful idea. It would change the point structure compared to classic games. The current system does have some shockers sometimes. I remember that game the Saints had some years ago in which they were way behind and had to rally to catch up. With barely any time left, they only needed an extra point to go into OT, but they missed it. I remember the announcer screaming, "Oh, no! They missed the extra point!" It was actually quite humorous unless you were a Saints fan.

Anyway, leave it alone. If you must change it, move it back. Don't get rid of it. I like that there's a choice of 1 point via a PAT or 2 via the 2-point conversion.

I found the video of that Saints game. I had forgotten the last play from scrimmage was such a razzle dazzle play.
