NFL Network critique on the draft... and Matt Mosley Post #18

It was meat and potatoes. Nothing sexy, but the little things could help our team.

That being said I'm less than thrilled with the outcome.

Mosley must have to stick with the Scouts Inc. evaluation because he works at ESPN now. If he still worked at the DMN, he'd trust Gosselin's sources and realize that Jason Williams and Robert Brewster were third-round talents.

When it comes to draft rankings, Gosselin is FAR superior to Scouts Inc.

Gosselin just finished No. 1 AGAIN in the top-100 rankings (out of 52 different top-100 boards tracked by The Huddle Report).

Seriously. This was a below average draft and far below two other teams in our division.
But I know that homers will try to spin it, but that's understandable. I'm sure their are more than a few Raider fans spinning their teams draft too. That's what blind homers do.

Thank you, Adam. I agree 100%. The Sporting News and Scout, Inc. are pretty abysmal when it comes to rating NFL talent. Aside from maybe Butler and Buehler, I'm pretty sure even Moseley knows that we had our picks ranked just about where every other team did.

There is a reason Mike Lombardi has lost all his NFL jobs.

There's also a reason he tied for second-to-last out of the 92 mock drafts scored by The Huddle Report.

Nice job putting a mid-fourth-round pick in the first round, Mike.

NFL Draft Scout had Buehler ranked 134th overall and a fourth-round pick. We took him 172nd, at the end of the fifth.

Ok, well there you go. Even better...

Oh I strongly disagree with you. Call me a homer if you want, its cool but I think we helped ourself a great deal...

This draft doesn't do much for the eyeball test. At a quick glance, you can't help but say, "meh."

Am I that pleased with the draft? Not really. I see a few guys that offer potential long term, but I can't help but wonder if the kickoff guy will end up being the most productive guy out of the lot.

With that said, I'm not going to jump off a cliff. Drafts take a while to grade out, and it's just as foolish to crucify the front office for the next five months over what transpired this weekend as it would be to go overboard in praise. How many "great" picks that are praised by Kiper and Co. turn out to be colossal busts? Happens all the time.

Plus, this front office has done pretty darn well in recent years, so I don't know if it's necessarily fair to immediately throw 1995 and 1996 in its face.

But, again, a somewhat blah weekend, but we'll see.

I don't even want to acknowledge Waddle and Lombardi....they seem totally clueless. About the only one I really feel knows what he is talking about is Mayock and he seemed pretty comfortable with most of the picks I caught.

Philly or New England could have picked an eskimo from the Northwest Territories and people would have called him the steal of the draft.

I definitely agree with your final comment.

I don't know how many times I heard ESPN essentially say today: "Was ___ a reach in the second round? Maybe to us mortals. But New England knows something we don't. Great pick! This is why they always win."

We'll see. They've had their fair share of busts lately.

The Cowboys are currently having a great fifth round. Only problem is we're still in the third.

:lmao2:

Still think the Cowboys did well and only time will tell, but that was a funny line.

It could, but I doubt it. This scouting department is superior to the one we had in place then.

With Ireland and Parcells gone, and Larry Lacewell now back watching player tapes, how can you be so sure?????

Last season's draft.

I disagree with Lombardi a lot, but he seemed fair today.
We had very bad luck early--which was obvious--so we traded back, recouped, rallied and at least in our minds did the best we could to improve out team.
Last year we got lucky when some we liked slipped down, this year not so much so.....we'll be FINE though.

All I know is New England's drafting has sucked lately....don't get the obsession with them.

Oh no. Mosley is fully to the media dark side, where the more you ridicule the local team, the cooler you are.

I freaken hate the media in this town, it's like if we live in Philly or something.:bang2:

The players for the ILB position that Jason Williams will fill in the near future were terrible in this draft. He was, by far, the most gifted guy. He had the production on the field, too. He is an exceptional talent. The Titans loved this guy and would have drafted him in a heartbeat in round 3. Williams was clocked as low as 4.44 at the Northwestern pro day. This guy can fly, and he will knock your head off.

I would rather have Williams than Gilbert.

I think Williams can challenge Carpenter for the nickel job this year. If he can win the job in the middle of the year, that would be great.
