On my way into this thread I was like "Nope! Stupid! Not interested at all"

Then I read the inquiring idea. Now I'm sitting here like "Hmmmm. This kind of does interest me. It is a neat concept".

Under the guise that these games are regular season. They’ll charge the full amount. Product is already watered down. They should expand the rosters and just leave the game alone.

Aren’t they already charging full price for preseason games?

This new strategy is fantasy football.

The dilemma of drafting all different bye weeks... or everyone with the same bye week and eating the loss.

I can see it now. “Bill Belichick has informed Jay Gruden that since the Commanders aren’t viewed as a competent organization, they’re gonna go ahead and sit Tom Brady for that game.”

I didn't speculate anything. I'm just going by what has already been stated. The players union shouldn't agree to this dumb idea just so the league can profit on two more games without paying the players more.

Who said anything about a salary cap increase? The players aren't getting paid more. They are getting paid just the same for the same amount of time played. That's why there is a proposed game limit.

More money is being generated.

I'm cautiously positive about this idea.

It will be interesting to see what the players would demand in order to agree to this. The salary cap would naturally go up since revenues would increase. But expanded rosters would be essential and they may need to increase the salary cap further to make it all work (by which I mean make the cap a higher percentage of revenues).

I also think that "playing in a game" would have to come with some snap count minimum. In other words, if a player is in for fewer than say 12 snaps, that game doesn't count against his 16 game limit. Such a rule would solve the problem of kickers, punters and long snappers, as well as guys who get hurt in the first series of a game. I could see all sorts of interesting roster decisions: you could really have a return specialist, where that's all he does almost every week but he plays as a receiver (or whatever) when you're resting guys.

The biggest problem I see is that week 17 (which I guess would be week 19) would become even more of a waste of time than it already is. Now, teams that have clinched their playoff seed rest their starters. Under the new system, I guarantee teams would just plan on week 19 as one of the rest games, and almost all of those games will end up being played by backups by necessity.

Well you said “They are getting paid just the same for the same amount of time played.” So what did you mean?

IDK, what if your fighting for a playoff spot in the last 2 weeks of the season and your key players have already played the allotted games, you would go into key match ups at less than full strength.

So would your opponents. I'm guessing everyone would just count on game 18 as a rest game, since it's meaningless for most teams anyway.

But on the other hand, it's on you if you go into a key matchup at less than full strength. It's not like everyone wouldn't already know the rules.

So if your backup QB dinged in the 1st series does the Dak then get to enter the game? lol Maybe you put a bunch of 2nd string players in and they all fall to injury on 1st series and we have to put the starters back in. lol

Not in favor of 18 game schedule in this format or any other.

I would assume if this passes, the player would have to be on the inactive list for 2 games - so no - he would not get to come in

It's an idiotic idea. Enjoy watching games where you rarely have both teams at full strength because of mandatory rest weeks for players. Completely and totally moronic.
Assuming everyone plans for game 18 to be a rest game, you're looking at 22 starters taking one game off each over 17 games. So it's a little over one starter per game. Probably less than one starter per game given injuries. Hard for me to get too worked up about that.

I do see another big problem with this, though. If I'm the Cowboys and I'm in a competitive battle for the division title, and I'm about to play the Patriots, or whoever the strongest AFC team happens to be, on the road, I'd be pretty tempted just to sit all my starters and dump that game. Interconference games are the least meaningful for tiebreakers, and I figure we have a pretty low chance of winning a road AFC game against a really good team anyway. Throw that one game and play at full strength against everyone else. That behavior would be good for the Cowboys but really bad for the league.

They charge full amount for pretend games now on a season ticket.

It's limited to 16 games, the games they play. They don't get a revenue share if they don't play.
