Fans are asked to treat Chiefs games like bowling matches
By MJD
See all those fans in that picture? They are dirty, filthy people who are running afoul of Arrowhead Stadium law and should be ejected and beaten with a railroad spike.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a "Fan Code of Conduct," which is essentially a list of rules that fans have to follow when they're attending a game at Arrowhead. In theory, it's not a bad idea, as you'd like your stadium to provide a friendly atmosphere for families and people who aren't drunken hooligans.

In practice, though, it might not be such a great idea, especially if the person responsible for coming up with the rules is an 85-year-old woman who teaches the 2nd grade and regards standing up as one of the evil things that young whippersnappers often do. Seriously, standing erect is the No. 2 item on the list of things that are prohibited:

• Standing and/or obstructing the view of other fans

Not only that, Pro Football Talk points out how seated fans can anonymously tattle on their upright counterparts:

The Chiefs also have set up a text-messaging system that allows fans who might be offended by behaviors like standing to report the situation to the powers-that-be.

Awesome. I hear they're even taking the extra step and including bed pans with every seat, so no one has to get up to use the bathroom. They're going to make the beer and peanut vendors crawl through the stadium on all fours. Also, as soon as you get to your seat and sit down, an usher's going to come by and inject you with a temporary paralytic.

Maybe I'm overreacting. The anti-standing policy might only be temporary. Maybe they'll lift the ban when the Chiefs can field an offense that might actually score a touchdown every now and then and might give fans a reason to stand. Maybe this is only the policy until Brodie Croyle improved or is replaced.

Still, it seems like an asinine, joyless, and dangerous policy. If standing is banned, we can't be far away from banning yelling, too, can we? I'm all for a friendly fan experience, but I'd also rather not turn Arrowhead into the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Gracias, KC Chiefs Football

Myself and doctor 32 had a guy come up to us during the first quarter of the Dallas New Orleans game two years ago and ask us to sit down because he couldnt see.

He was about 10 rows behind and above us. The cowboys were on defense. We were standing up and yelling and clapping. The guy taps me on the shoulder and tells me his wife and himself could not see the field and that he didnt buy a ticket to look at the back of his jersey.

both of us wanted to strangle him. He went and got the usher, which is a 17 year old 100 lb girl at texas stadium and she told us to sit down. We told her no way and she got security. We told them we were just clapping when they were on defense and standing up and they asked us to sit down.

meanwhile the moron left after reggie bush scored to start the third.

I dont understand people. IN many cities that guy would have been heckled beyond belief for asking us that, but in Dallas the fans all just kind of mind their business.

If you are not going to stand and cheer why go to the game?

Not surprised at all. I scored some very nice tickets a week ago for a Royals game. I was lucky enough to sit behind home plate. Anyway, this guy a couple of rows ahead of me was jawing at some of the worst Royals players (yelling stats, no bad words) and he was kicked out quickly. My wife and my twelve year old were with me and we all thought it was nuts that they guy was escorted out. It is a sporting event for goodness sake.

Arrowhead is one of the best stadiums in the country as far as atmosphere and fan participation. Bad move. But it is the Chiefs.

So he is the moron for asking you to sit down. And you are the smart one because you 1) ignored him, 2) ignored the usher, 3) argued with security, and 4) would have prefered to heckle him (ie. acted like an idiot) for wanting to enjoy the game.

Perhaps he or his wife have medical reasons which prevent them from being able to stand long periods. Perhaps they just want to be able to sit and see the game. Everyone understands standing and getting excited for a big play, but for an entire defensive series may be a bit much.

I can see how it would frustrate you, however it seems to me that he was in the right. I do not see "while they were on defense" as a justification. I personally enjoy watching the D more than the O. Sometimes being a human being means being considerate of others wishes, even if it means you have to sacrifice "standing and clapping". Just try and see it from someone elses perspective fans come in all sorts of varieties and like all sorts of things.

Lastly I think the fact the man was not heckled by other fans is more a compliment to our fans. Insulting and jeering someone for asking you to sit is no way to conduct yourself. No one wants to be surrouned by crude and low brow thugs when they watch the game. How can you think that is acceptable...seriously how old are you?

wow.

Double wow.

I am wrong for standing and cheering while the cowboys are on defense and the saints are trying to run their offense? Really?

He was in a higher position behind me seat wise. The reality was we were most likely not even in more than 10% of his viewing angle. He was bigger and in better shape than me. His wife was perfectly healthy. They were about 35.

So um try again. None of what you typed makes any sense at a football game. The lower level of texas stadium basically stood the entire game offense and defense last year. Where as my section only would get going when they were on defense.

He left in the 3rd qtr. He was not a real fan. He was a guy who really didnt care if he was there or not. I am not going to be bullied by any fan. Not one. He had no right to tell us to sit down which is what he did, he didnt ask he told us to sit down because he didnt buy a ticket to look at our jerseys. I will tell you just like I told him. Stand up, cheer on the team and have a good time.

The guy was looking for a fight or some kind of reaction. It is lunacy to expect fans to sit and watch the games while being quiet, what would the point of going to an nfl football game be? I dont heckle people, yell, swear or scream at the players...etc.. I am in to the game and make alot of noise when we are on D. Pretty much all of the season ticket holders in my section do, its the people who come to one game a year and want people to cater to them who are a pain in the rear.

and again no one argued with the security. When he came over I told him exactly what was said to us and exactly what we along with 50000 other people were doing and he said ok, just dont stand the whole time. Which we were not and would not.

Not many people stand up in Texas Stadium, unless it's a big 3rd down, and most don't, even then.

It may piss people off that the crowd is tame, but if most people aren't standing, it's rude to stand.

As they say, when in Rome...

Also, it doesn't require standing to cheer at the top of your lungs.

Thats my point. All of us that go to every game were up as always. The people immediately behind me and in front of me. It was ridiculous what this guy was asking.

and your wrong about the stadium. The entire lower level this year basically never sat down during the game, sounds crazy but its true.

I am curious was I supposed to tap the people in front of me on the shoulder and ask them to sit down or should I have embraced the atmosphere and the game and joined in with everyone else. Only a rick with a P asks people to sit down at a football game.

now if we were standing the entire time the guy would have had a legit gripe but that was not the case. I wouldnt go to games if the stadium were so poor you couldnt stand up and cheer when your team is on defense in the middle of the biggest game of the year. What would be the point. If I wanted to sit in a seat and daydream I would go to the movies.

well as long as you were not bullied.

AND NEVER WILL BE! *ominous glare*

seriously though I am not looking for an internet fight. I just think you sounded a little inconsiderate. But I am glad you gave him and his wife a thurough medical exam. I think if he wanted a reaction/fight he would not have gone to the usher. He probably felt like he paid for a ticket and wanted to enjoy the game sitting...in the conveniently supplied chair. You said he asked in original post and now you say he told..WHAT AM I TO BELIEVE?!?

I wasn't there, don't know what happened...don't really care. Just bugged me you seemed so unwilling to try and understand a different perspective.

alright dude. You buy a ticket and enjoy the game the way you want to.

I did nothing that was inconsiderate. I dont want to be a part of the kind of crowd at an nfl game you described though.

and no I wont be bullied. Every week there are different people in my aisle. All they do is get up and get food and drinks. Right in the middle of plays. Its absurd. Go to a restaraunt. I always tell people wait till the play is over and I will happily move for you and every year i get at least one drunk guy who becomes a tough guy and tells me what his ticket costs and how he will get up when he wants too. It never fails. There is no reason to get up right when the ball is snapped to go get food, every 10 minutes. That is inconsiderate and plainly stupid.

Werd.

When I watch a game all i care about is the game. I do not want to fear getting my face stomped by a bunch of drunk homers because I cheer for the cowboys. I don't live in Dallas, so I only get to see road games and always seem to find myself dodging drunken fists.

Good. You should have been made to sit down. the arrogance of some people who think their dollar they spent for the ticket is worth more than someone else's is obscene.

And for the mere fact the guy and his wife actually wanted to see the game and not the back of your jersey you wanted to strangle him.

Great fan you are. Way to represent.
