This is NOWHERE NEAR the big reach alot of folks think it is. The 4-6 defense has ALOT in common with the 3-4 defense " look it up if you want" , it has an AWEFULL LOT in common with the Phillips 3-4. Its all a matter of semantics really. The 4-6 "named after chicago safety Doug Plank" has its origin in the 3-4. Heres how that all ties in.........Greg Williams is a disciple of Jeff Fischer, Fischer is a disciple of Buddy Ryan. Wade Phillips in fact coached under Buddy Ryan in Philly. He coached the linebackers. Think of the 46 as a jazzed up version of the phillips 34, with Ware playing the role of Richard Dent. So as you can see........Wade and Williams have much in common.
Uh, not it doesn't. It was a 4-3 scheme. The 4 down linemen for the Bears were Dent, Hampton, Perry, and McMichaels.

Name the 4 LBs. Never mind, there were 3. Singletary, Wilson, and Marshall.

Obviously that was some very fearful Commander fan making himself feel better.

If he had indeed landed the job, someone else besides a NY TV channel would be reporting it by now.

.................Cant give you a link because I dont remember exactly but it was from a book on the 46 that im PRETTY SURE was written By Buddy himself. In the book Buddy specifically says the 4-6 is somewhat of an offshoot of the 3-4. Richard Dent was actually called a RUSH END in the 4-6, NOT one of the 4 down lineman. Again, just semantics and positioning but still.

..............................And actually if you want to be technical, one of the safeties played up in the box and acted almost like a 4th linebacker. Hence........the name of the defense, the 46, named after safety Doug Plank. Im RIGHT on all of this so dont argue!....:laugh2:j.k

looks like dallas is more then taking a look.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Cowboys are in discussions with former assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams.
Dallas is reportedly looking at Williams as a defensive coordinator, a job that was already offered to Dom Capers. Capers will probably take on a consultant role instead. If Williams is hired, the Cowboys will either fire incumbent coordinator Brian Stewart, or ask him to take a demotion.

Curious, the fact that the CBs often blitzed, did that make them LBs too?

You are partially correct. Just not on it having origins in the 3-4. In the 46 there were times that both OLBs were lined up to the outside of the MLB.

Deja vu.

It was written by Rex, his son.

Funny. The quote you're giving, is taking PFT as its source, which is taking Schefter as its source. But the original Schefter report said nothing about him being offered the DC position or anything about Stewart stepping down.

Soon we'll see reports quoting this source that Wade is stepping down and Gregg Williams is becoming the HC.

.........Im not saying the 46 IS a 3-4 defense. Im saying ALOT of it is somewhat based upon the 3-4.An aggressive Phillips style 3-4. Look, I have no reason to lie. Heck, Fritz Shurmers old THREE FOUR eagle defense that he ran with the Rams was based on the 46. You have a NOSEGUARD over the center in a true 46, you have TWO OTHER down lineman in a true 46, AND a RUSH END lined up wide....THINK DENT/Ware. For good measure you have that other safety playing up in the box acting as another l.b. Tell ya what.......seems to have ALOT more in common with a phillips style 34 than it does with a 4-3.

Based on that kind of logic any defense that puts 8 men in the box is a form of 46.

Nope.

Annnnnnnnnnnnd, for the final nail in the coffen....Gee, wonder WHY we would even be talking to a guy who's defensive background is rooted in the 46, when in fact the 46 has nothing in common with the Phillips 34. :banghead:Just wouldnt make sense now would it. And YET........we did talk to him. Hmmmmmmm

IMHO, the 46 has similarities to both the 3-4 and 4-3. There are variations of the 46 that are closer to the 3-4 and there are variations of the 46 that are closer to the 4-3.

Wade and Gregg did both coach under Buddy, though.
