Troy is NOT the hardest hitting safety in the league. That honor could probably be put up to a vote by offensive players, and would probably come down to Taylor and Williams. I watch a lot of football, and the only person I've seen who hits as hard as ST on a regular basis is Roy. Both of them can bring the wood, and do bring it on a regular basis.

TP is no better in coverage than Roy. Simply, he had a very good FS playing over the top that allowed him to roam free. He was essentially allowed to freelance all over the place, which led to the number of plays he made.

Also, he REALLY upped his game in the playoffs. The difference between the current reputation of Roy and TP is that Roy unfortunately was beaten in a game that everyone was watching (MNF against the 'Skins), but very, very good throughout the rest of the year. TP was no where as good as Roy during the regular season, but everyone saw some of his great performances in the playoffs. For that reason, he will carry the reputation of being this spectacular player, when in reality there is no doubt in my mind that Roy is the superior talent.
you just said every single thing that I clicked on this thread to type.. Im completely serious.. my thoughts EXACTLY.. well done my friend..

Among the Eagles (not necessarily throughout the NFL), my vote would go to
Brian Dawkins ...you be the judge.

Among those hardest Eagle hitters back in the day. One of my football savvy mentors (would rather keep the person autonomous ...they know who they are), gave broke me off a piece of knowledge that I didn't know about one of the NFL's hardest hitters ...

"In 1960, Eagles LB Chuck Bednarik hit Giants RB Frank Gifford so hard that Gifford not only doesn't remember the entire game he played that day, he also he missed the entire 1961 season trying to recover from the hit. One thing to remember, this hit was in Yankee Stadium on a guy who was considered nearly a deity by Giants fans."

Here's an excerpt from Bednarik about the hit...

Since I was following the ball, I didn't know where Gifford had gone. One of our linebackers, Chuck Weber, was scrambling to get the ball.

My eyes were closed and my hands clenched, and I just happened to turn around. Unbeknownst to me, Gifford was laying on the ground, unconscious. I had no idea he was there. Someone snapped that picture of me standing over Gifford. At a card show, someone once asked me, "Mr. Bednarik, what were you saying right there?" I replied, "I was saying, `This [bleeping] game is over.'"

Here's the picture he refers to

Is it just me, or is Troy Polomaleau really this good? I can remember him getting blasted in the media for being overrated as a rookie, and a year later he is the best defensive player in the NFL? While he had an outstanding year last season, does anyone else think he is worthy of this rating?

Whenever you win a Super Bowl........them type of guys are always at/near the top!

Superior talent?? You've got to be kidding right? Troy P. is arguebly the best all around safety in the game right now. That's nothing against Roy but come on let's look at what he's doing nearly every game.

It's a good thing you aren't evaluating secondary talent. TP gets burned more than Roy and he isn't in the same league in regards to hitting.

Remember the hit Roy put on Todd Heap in the Pro Bowl a few years back? Funny thing during an interview later Roy said he pulled up before he actually hit Heap and still put him on the ground.

That one and him running over Kevin Jones to get to the QB are my 2 favorite hits by him.

I don't put a ton of stock into hits against a receiver who is in the process of trying to make a catch or just made one. A defenseless receiver is an easy target. I prefer the hits against guys who are already running with the ball or who are trying to block but get pasted instead. So Roy's hits against Sean Alexander, Kevin Jones, Jimmy Williams (the 49ers kickoff return guy), Todd Pinkston (when he tried to block Roy), etc., were better to me than his hit on Heap.

Well Heap isn't exactly the size of a regular receiver. He laid him on his back and said he let up on it not to mention during the Pro Bowl. Not disagreeing with you though Adam.

And thanks Tomson for posting that video. I haven't seen that in awhile.

Taylor is a fine hitter. Roy hurts people. Big guys, little guys, defenseless, whatever it's all the same to him. How many people has he actually injured and removed from games? That's ultimate measure of the force this guy is bringing. Otherwise, what does "NFL's hardest hitter" mean?

I think it's code for "Most Interesting Hair", or "Player that does the most interesting pre-snap meaningless Spin move".
