Nick Carter on Cowherd today about Dak

I'm just wondering what more we need to see. He ain't getting top 5 QB money. I don't think he's sniffing Matt Ryan salary numbers and I would think both the Cowboys and Dak are well aware of that. Someone with his work ethic is going to continue to improve even if he never is a top tier QB. As long as continues to step up in crunch time and high pressure situations, well, we can live with that.

QB and ESPECIALLY the QB of the Dallas Cowboys, is not a position you should EVER say, "ok, we can live with that" When you say that, even with a SB caliber team around him, you will never see the SB. The Cowboys, RIGHT NOW, in my opinion are a SB caliber team, minus Dak. I like Dak and will not bash him per say, but he is not an even top 15 caliber NFL QB. I would not sign him this year, or next. No way. I would ask him for another season to prove himself and come full circle. This Cowboys team will be the real deal next season. All pieces well in place, except the QB position. If Dak steps up, through the rest of the year and next year, I'd have no issues giving him, 30 mil per year. The way it stands now? I'd never pay him more than 5 million. And I'm serious!

I think he might take a 3 year deal for around that amount, as long as you throw in 2019.
I feel Prescott is the type of guy who's self aware enough to look at the big picture in regard to building a balanced team vs. paying a QB top dollar.

When a team pays Kirk Cousins, he of the 26-30-1 record after 2017, $28 million a year, if anybody thinks Dak will take $15-16 mil a year, they're delusional, even if he stays the same as this year. .

And even if they think Dak is average now, he won't be as he develops. In his third season Alex Smith had a QBR of 57 and a 2-5 record. He has some good seasons on his record but his contract with the Commanders was 94 Million over 4 years.

I hit CRTL+ALT+F7 and my computer automatically prints:

Drew Brees had a bad stretch at the same point in his career as Dak, go check the stats. Also Brees is Saint because the Chargers didn't think he was worth a big contract.

There is a small tidbit in there you didn't mention.

The Chargers gave him an incentive laden deal because in early 2006 he had arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder and there were concerns he might have more extensive shoulder issues. Even after surgery he had to go through some extensive rehab to get shoulder movement back. So the Chargers made a fairly sizable contract (5 years, $50MM) that was heavy on incentives. Brees balked and the Saints felt comfortable with his shoulder signed him for 6 years, $60MM with more guaranteed money. Miami was also involved but became skittish after evaluating his shoulder.

And even if they think Dak is average now, he won't be as he develops. In his third season Alex Smith had a QBR of 57 and a 2-5 record. He has some good seasons on his record but his contract with the Commanders was 94 Million over 4 years.

So you are saying there is zero chance what you see is what you get from Dak going forward? That it's a certainty he's only going to get better from here on out?

The OP is asinine, binary trash. There is a spectrum of QB salaries commensurate with their play. His ideal pay would be around the average where he is right now.

As for him improving, his accuracy is unlikely to improve greatly. Can anyone name a QB whose accuracy improved significantly after their rookie deals? He needs to be more consistent with his mechanics but I just don't see it.

OTOH, his ball security and ability to read defenses is going to improve.

did you not see the part where he said you pay him NEXT year at the 700 kon this contract? and then Franchise him the following year with the non exclusive tag. That means you would have him for the 19 and 20 season before you walked away.... and you only walked away if you felt he wasnt worth paying... but that is 2 mor full seasons. Im pretty sure youd know if you wanted to keep him by then.
Now do you pay him a "estimated" $28 million a year for a "Top End" QB this offseason, or do you put it off a year or two where the cost of a "Top End" QB raises to probably $35+ million a year?

Jerry and Stephen are right. If they sign him sooner-than-later, while his contract may look "huge" for a year or two, it could be considered a bargain by mid way through.

Plus, with a contract, you can manipulate it so the cap hit is lower. With a Franchise Tag, it ALL counts against the cap.

I get it, pre-Amari Dak was bad. But post-Amari Dak is more than capable, which is much better than what about 2/3rd of the teams in the NFL can say, to include EVERY other team in the NFC East.

JMHO

Heard this today and could not agree more.

He used Matt Ryan as the line, and said if a qb is above that line, you can pay him bucks... the Rodgers, Brady, Rivers type QBs.

If the QB is below that line, you can not pay the guy like he is a superstar qb... if you pay a below Matt Ryan QB like he is Brady, you are screwed.

Said he would let Dak play next year for his 700 k deal and see what happens and if you need to Franchise him with the non exclusive tag, which would mean if anyone signs him away from you, they have to give up 2 number 1 picks.... and as Carter said, nobody is gonna give up that for Dak.

This was good stuff and i agree 100% As he said, if better than Ryan, pay him. If he is not better than Ryan, you got to be prepared to walk away.
Dak is not playing a game next year if he is not extended. This let's make him play out his contract crap works for scrubs not a player like Dak. Nick Wright is the same talking head that had Dak in the Hall of Fame in 2016. He jumps on and off of bandwagons.

Did the Refs make the Eagles give up 5 high draft picks for Wentz?

If Dak keeps playing decent, as he has been, we'd be wise to give him maybe a 3 year/45 mil offer. Why? Because Dak is improving, and he may get to another level. Hard working kid w/ a great attitude, yeah, he could.

If you can tell me he would take that offer today? I'd make it.

That would be the smart thing to do but Jerry won’t .
Why? Because he doesn’t like QB controversies or drama. It’s more difficult to market and promote. Dak has the marketability maybe more than Romo did.

Jerry wants to lock this up and probably longer and for more than we are discussing here. Jerry loves the big splash and he wants to show how right he was with his decision.

Scary!
:omg:

Jerry and Stephen already said they are going to give Dak a new contract by season's end, not by the end of 2019 or 2020.

How much is Matt Ryan getting paid per year?

He wasn't talking about Matt Ryan's contract, he was talking about his talent level.
