Nine defensive linemen added that didn't play a down last year?

The list of the DL in the OP. That is far better than what was on the field the last half of the season last year.
May not scare anyone at this point, but maybe they will eventually get there. We will just need to wait and see.

After all, how many of us asked....Selvie? who's this guy that couldn't stick on a roster...he turned out decent.

Precedent already set with other players who returned to the NFL.
Brent probably doesn't play this year but his agent has apparently already started discussing what steps need to be taken for him to do so.

Smartest move is a quiet rejoining of the team mid-season where he doesn't play but begins to practice and work out at the facilities then he is full go next off-season.

So, setting aside issues of the appropriateness of having him back at all...he was sentenced in mid-January. And then had at least some few weeks of time served, if that really does come off the top. That gets him out probably some time in June, depending on how much prior time he'd already served. Does that sound about right? If he's able to keep his strength up, that'd give him at least a couple months of getting into football shape in camp. Realistically, with that much time off and camp being compromised, it might not be enough, but if he were to apply for reinstatement (unretire, whatever) and get a suspension ruling, can't he realistically be with the team and contributing as soon as the suspension (if any is handed out) is served? Work him in like we did Brian Waters last year, and it would seem like he's potentially available to help out in a rotation for most of the season next year.

That's nine players to go with George Selvie and Nick Hayden.

Great post. Also there is a huge difference in guys like Selvie and Hayden as excellent bench players instead of being OK to mediocre players when forced to start.

I think you are exactly right, they add 2 draft picks in the first three rounds plus a few more with the late picks. I think they still sign another FA DE as well.

Very quietly, some important things are happening on the defensive front.

What if...Dallas adds the following list of players by camp, none of which played a down for Dallas last year?

Henry Melton

Jeremy Mincey

Terrell McClain

Tyrone Crawford

Ben Bass

Anthony Spencer

Aaron Donald/Tim Jernigan/Dee Ford - first round

Another d-line draft pick in round 2 or 3

Josh Brent (not by camp)

That's nine players to go with George Selvie and Nick Hayden. That is an entirely different group than what Dallas rolled out the last half of last year.

That sounds like a plan. Rod Marinelli's plan.

A lot of new faces. Lets just hope Marinelli and Lett can pull this group together.

I wouldn't count on Josh Brent to be back with the team any time soon, if ever. He just got 180 days but more then that, the NFL hasn't really spoken as yet, so far as I know. I'm thinking that the last thing Goody and the NFL want is Brent playing in front of TV audiances any time soon. JMO

would have thought the same for vick but after he got out of Jail he went to Philly.

FWIW, some of the guys like Broaddus and Mickey are saying on Twitter the team isn't interested in Allen now that Melton is in the fold. I wonder in the team is targeting Barr more and more with the pick at 16.

I do not either. He was an "okay" player. But ever since he has been gone, the level of his play is being remembered as much better than it actually was.

well, OK is a lot better then some of the FA brought in last year

I disagree. Brent was tried, convicted and he is paying his debt to society. If he elects to play football again then he should have that opportunity.

It would be a big story at first, then die down eventually. I really don't feel passionate either way about it. I would lean more towards bringing him back if his teammates felt ok with it.

The teams shown every indication of sticking by him. I'm sure they want him back at some point.

Might as well change the title of this thread to "Should Brent be allowed back?". After all, it is going to go in that direction for at least 3 more pages

Sad thing is maybe two people will even know him.

Sure. Losing Ware and Hatcher is probably a good thing, right?

Yes!. Love both players but don't let sentimentality color your judgement. Do you feel that Ware was any kind of force after game 3? Hatcher lost it after game 9. Whether from age, injury, or whatever, for the majority of the season neither of these guys was irreplaceable by any stretch of the imagination. A healthy Melton is more than a replacement for the Hatcher that was here last year and anyone that can play at an NFL level on two legs is better than the Ware we had here for the last 2. I have a lot of respect for both of those guys but the truth is that it isn't hard to replace most of their output for the last couple of years.
