I will admit that until this year i did not see a single Arkansas game. Even this year i have only watch casually. And i know that everyone has major love for Mcfadden. But the games i was watching (or at least the plays i was watching) made me wonder how "special" this guy is. To be honest i felt like i was watching another version of Reggie Bush. I didnt get to see him break that many tackles at all. And i strongly believe that in order to be successful at the NFL level you need to be great at getting yards after contact. The league is too fast for some burner with light legs to make a serious inpact.
Lets look at the back like LT. He is very strong. Emmitt was very strong. Adrian Peterson is very strong. Frank Gore is very strong, Larry Johnson is very Strong, Marion Barber is very strong. I want to like McFadden. (even though we probably wont get him)

Now i could be wrong about him. Maybe he has great ability at yards after contact. But the games i have watched seemed like Felix Jones was just as good if not better.

Look at the stats:

Mcfadden:
Stat Overview Rushing Receiving Fumbles
YEAR ATT YDS AVG LNG TD REC YDS AVG LNG TD FUM LST
2005 176 1113 6.3 70 11 14 52 3.7 12 0 0 0
2006 284 1647 5.8 80 14 11 149 13.5 70 1 0 0
2007 147 822 5.6 56 7 8 61 7.6 18 0 0 0

Felix Jones
YEAR ATT YDS AVG LNG TD REC YDS AVG LNG TD FUM LST
2005 99 626 6.3 80 3 8 100 12.5 23 0 0 0
2006 154 1168 7.6 85 6 15 107 7.1 29 3 0 0
2007 66 673 10.2 73 5 9 79 8.8 19 0 0 0

10 Yards per carry and 5 touchdowns is pretty impresive.

I've always said McFadden cannot break tackles, but everyone refutes that, but cannot produce proof. I on the other hand have, yet they still turn a blind eye to it. The media says McFadden is god, therefore the fans believe it.

As for Felix, I like him too, but I see issues in his game too. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have issue drafting either one of these guys. Would I draft McFadden with the first overall pick this year? No. There are other players who will be far better players in the NFL than McFadden.

Here is what I want to happen. (based on other players that would surely be taken before hand and some not)

  • Kenny Phillips, FS - Miami
  • Justin King, CB - Penn State
  • Malcolm Jenkins, CB - Ohio State
  • Malcolm Kelly, WR - OU (VERY TO like)
  • Mike Hart, RB - Michigan

Give me Phillips, King, or Jenkins with the Browns pick and I will take either Kelly or Hart with the Cowboys #1.

whoah - draft scenarios that don't include mcfadden!!!

i'll keep an eye on these players so thank you for bringing them up. i just get hesitant when someone says a player they like is like a top player in the league today. but it really depends on what you mean by that.

What I mean is I think Phillips, King, and Jenkins will be better overall NFL players than McFadden. (I'm NOT saying McFadden will be a bust!) Most of all, we need a player like Phillips MUCH more than we need McFadden. I think if we landed Mike Hart in the draft, he would be an incredible player to play beside Barber. He is like Barber in many ways, except he is faster and has a more explosive first step. He runs with power like Barber, just not as powerful.

EDIT: btw, I suspect McFadden will be gone long before the Cowboys first pick.

I must admit, that even I have been having second thoughts about McFadden since I've kept an eye on Felix Jones's numbers. Something just isn't right there when the 2nd string back looks every bit as good, yet the #1 guy gets all the love. We'll see what happens.

But I do believe that this is going to be an extraordanairy class of RB's coming out. No reason in the world to have to take one with the Browns pick. We would wait till ours in the 1st round easily. Maybe even the 2nd round.

It might not be a dire position of need for us right now, but I have a man crush on Glen Dorsey from LSU. Reminds me of a young Warren Sapp. I doubt he makes it to the browns pick, but worth keeping an eye on nevertheless.

I agree, Dorsey will be long gone. I suspect he goes before McFadden. Hell depending on who has the top picks, Glen Dorsey, Jake Long, and Brian Brohm will all be gone before McFadden.

I don't really want McFadden. I want to improve our pass coverage with those two #1s. Maybe a safety and a corner.

The Reggie Bush comparison makes me think that you've never seen Reggie Bush or McFadden play. Felix Jones is the more appropriate Reggie Bush comparison.

And nyc, if we draft Mike Hart, I'll throw up in my mouth.

If we draft McFadden with a top 5 pick, I will throw up in my mouth. ;) Not only is there better talent to be had, it's at positions we need more!

Have a look for yourself: Malcolm Kelly
I'm interested to see what Kelly runs in the 40. I don't think he's very fast at all. But he's tall and has great hands and great control of his body.

WalterFootball says he runs a 4.47. Thats not blazing fast, but he is also 6'4 217lbs. As I said, very TO like.

Don't trust any 40 times until they're done by NFL scouts. Other sites have him in the 4.5s. He could run 4.6s for all we know. He looks that slow (4.6s) on the field.

I think Early Doucet will be around for a 31/32 pick. Then we can take the best corner in the 10-20 range with the Cleveland pick.

I spent a lot of time debating Doucet and Kelly. I just think Kelly has *it*. I agree with the 5-15 pick. I'm hoping King (CB, Penn State), Phillips (FS, Miami), or Jenkins (CB, Ohio State) can be had with the Browns pick.

I think the Browns will end up 7-9. Where that makes them fall in the draft I don't know, but I'm willing to bet it won't be above #10.

I think Phillips would be pretty much a waste. Hamlin is doing a pretty good job. He was not the problem against Tom Brady, and until then, our secondary was performing pretty well. I think Hamlin and Watkins hold down the fort for quite a while.

Re: Kelly. I don't like slow receivers. Some can get open using their body, like Keyshawn, but I don't see that same sort of ability with Kelly. He just relies on being tall in college. That doesn't translate very well. His routes look pretty sloppy to me too. He does have great hands, but that just isn't enough.

I like Phillips because he is a FS and one of the best safeties in college right now. Hamlin is a SS, and I think putting a true FS with Ro Williams is the better choice.

Hamlin is a FS. He's played FS just about all of his career. He has the speed, the range, and ball skills to play all over the field.

He can also hit hard, which is what people associate with a SS. But that doesn't mean he should be a SS.

See, from what I've seen. I think he a natural SS and was just playing out of position. Sure, he has some coverage skills, but even a SS should have coverage skills. I would just rather have a natural FS. I guess it's just my adequate is not good enough attitude.
