You may be right but the level of competition he played against could keep him in the lower half of Rd 1. Look at the draft history, since the 2000 draft there have been 6 "small school" players drafted in the first round, only one has been in the top 20 picks and that was DeMarcus Ware and none were ever CBs. Now this year we have three small school CBs in McKelvin, DRC and Jenkins and they're all going to go top 20? I just don't see it. Even with his great offseason I still think there's a good chance that DRC falls to 22. Teams value production against top competition quite a bit and when you look at the stats of guys like Talib and Cason and you see them performing at the same level or better that than the small school guys and their playing against Big 12 and Pac 10 teams...that's something teams are going to take into consideration.
Heh...let's hope you're right.

Funny thing is, based on the Combine, if Cason ran a 4.42-4.44 instead of a 4.49, a lot of guys would probably consider him top 20 - esp. when you factor in his vertical, bench press, size, etc.

Yeah Cason had a terrific all around combine and I think it really quiets the criticism of his supposed lack of athleticism. Terrific athlete and a terrific football player who's very intelligent. I still know their would be people upset if we took him in Rd 1 though and they'd be livid if we took him over a CB like McKelvin, but I think they'd be pleasantly surprised once the season started.

Anyone have the rest of his Combine #s?

Edit: Just saw the 35.5 vert and the 10'8" broad jump. Those are fantastic #s.

In any case here the the players I think get picked before our 22nd pick.

QB
M Ryan

RB
DMAC
Stewart
Mendanhall

OT
J Long
R Clady

WR
M Kelly

CB
M Jenkins
McKelvin

DL
C Long
G Dorsey
S Ellis
V Gholston
D Harvey

That's 14 players I think have the greatest liklihood of being gone.

How was Talib's?

I just got home from work a bit ago, and haven't been able to catch most of it yet, but Talib looks pretty good in his backpedal and his COD during this last drill. Zbikowski looks good at safety, and that Tryon guy from ASU looks pretty good and is built like a safety...interesting, although I've never heard of him.

Aren't they though? I was shocked when I saw those. He also had 20 bench reps and a 4.08 20 yard shuttle, which, as you know, are two more fantastic #s. I don't know the rest though.

Talib had a good combine too.

That's what I thought.

And I think he had the highest reps for bench press as well. Or close to it.

It was a pretty solid workout.

Holy cow. Very nice. Yeah, there's no way this guy is slipping out of the 1st round. With those Combine #s he's definitely my #1 corner in the draft.

Just for fun I thought I'd throw out Terrence Newmans combine #s from '03.

40: 4.37
Vert: 41"
Broad: 11'4"
20 yard shuttle: 3.83 seconds
Cone Drill: 6.88

He would have ranked top 5 in every single category this year, and #1 in 3 of them. His combine was incredible and it's great that he's definitely carried it over onto the field in the NFL.

And people say the Combine or "Underwear Olympics" don't matter. Yet our two best players, Newman and Ware, were "freaks" at the Combine.

The best part is, he plays that fast in pads.

That was very impressive.

Even his vertical at 41" - did ANY player this year top that that you can recall?

Highest this year looks like Carl Stewart with a 39" vert.

Nope, not a single player. The highest was 39 I think.

I like that vertical and especially broad jump. As theo and I have talked about, I like the broad jump because it measures explosiveness going forward -- which is how you usually play football -- and it seems less "trainable" than most of the other tests. (That said, I'm not sure how this one compares to the other CBs this year.)

BTW, IIRC in Newman's year he was the only person in the entire combine other than Fargas to broad jump over 11 feet. And he was way over.

I think NE could go for Gholston. He would be fair value at their spot, IMO.

We need NO go draft a LB instead! And Minn to roll the dice on a real QB.

Fingers crossed!

Talib's vert was #2 among CB's (.5 inches behind DRC), his broad jump was tied for first and his cone drill was 4th. But yeah looking at a players broad jump is a great way of measuring how much explosion they have in their legs, you can combine it with vert too. Just a random stat, Marion Barber's leg explosion score was over 50 in his combine with a vert of 40 inches and a broad jump of 10'7", and that's exactly where his leg drive comes from.

Thankfully the Saints also need LB, the Lions also need LB and OT, the Cards also need LB, Vikings also need WR and S, and Pats also need LB. It'll be interesting to see how the first round plays out, we could have some really good talent falling into our lap at #22.
