Does anybody know what the accelerated cap hit would have been for trading Ware? I doubt it was even possible to trade him.

I think the more simple point by Norm is that multiple teams were interested, somebody would have negotiated a new deal before the trade that Ware would have accepted.

you could'nt have negotiated a new deal before the trade. thats done with guys in ther last year because you can spread out the money.in ware's case there was several years left with huge base salries. much more than the overall deal they paid him. they would have had to pay substancially more to him if they would have traded for him

the excelerated cap would have been on us. that was bonus money and it would remain with us. but the balance of his contract would have went to them and that was way more than they overall deal they paidd him

I advocated a trade the whole time. His salaries aren't a big deal because nothing was guaranteed, but the team would have him under contract for 4 years if they wanted. The biggest drawback was that no one thought a team would want him for multiple years.

If Denver wanted to guaranteed him 20m they could have easily used his existing contract to accomplish it. Just turn his 12.75m salary into a roster bonus instead of a signing bonus. By guaranteeing him another 7m in 2015 the old salary numbers would be discarded. Baltimore just did the exact same thing with Suggs.

Either way they probably wouldn't have got more than a 4th round pick, but it would allow them to save some face I suppose. Everyone definitely underestimated the market for Ware, but like they say "it only takes one".

they would have had him under contract for close to double what they paid him

This.

Remember when we traded for Roy Williams and we redid his deal? Same thing.

We still would have had the same cap hit.

Maybe there was a slight chance that you could have traded him, but not likely given other guys with big deals. They know you are getting released. They know what they can work with. Why overpay by sending a draft pick?

Ware would've been tough to trade, but I felt like trading him after 2011 would've been our best option. Coming off a huge season but obviously not the same 2008 2009 Ware.

But, at that time I felt like we were going to be ready to compete by 2013. I still stick by that. I still think if we would've stuck with Rob Ryan and kept building in the same direction, we would've made the playoffs last year, probably getting at least to the divisional round.

Point is... everyone already knew that he was going to be cut which makes it harder to get anything out of a trade especially if its a team where everyone wants to play like Den, Sea, SF....

When is Norm going to be released? lol.... smh

You can negotiate whatever you want. How do you think Doug Free took a 50% reduction in pay with many years left.

How do you think Dallas intended on reducing Ware's base salary with years left?

The team trades for the rights to the player, contract included.

The trade would have been contingent on a new agreement but I don't think there's anything about the length remaining on the contract would prevent a trade.

It would make no sense for it to not be possible because you'd make any team who trades for a player more bound to the contract than the team who wrote, which isn't really possible in a scenario where trades are contingent on new agreements.

Jerry is lazy.....that would have required him getting off his duff and picking up a phone and make some phone calls. That would have been too difficult

Wrong. Jerry's actually very good at giving away draft picks.

When it comes to accumulating them, he's not so good.

If Ware was traded to Denver, what would have been his incentive to redo his contact?

I mean he was guaranteed $12mil in base this season, $13mil in base next season and big numbers in '16 & '17.

There would be little leverage for Denver to get Ware to renegotiate his contract.

He wasn't guaranteed anything. All his base salaries were non-guaranteed. Denver could've traded for him and tore up his old contract and gave him the exact one they agreed to, as long as both parties consented. Ware would agree because he got 20m guaranteed instead of the 12.75m on paper that wouldn't guarantee until Week 1.

Norm's a genius. Guess the Cowboys never thought of trading him.

DEN still had little incentive to trade for him though. I was just saying it was possible. If they were ready to blow everyone out of the water, having exclusive rights via a trade was a minimal advantage.
