This.

Remember when we traded for Roy Williams and we redid his deal? Same thing.

We still would have had the same cap hit.

Maybe there was a slight chance that you could have traded him, but not likely given other guys with big deals. They know you are getting released. They know what they can work with. Why overpay by sending a draft pick?

because we were already under the cap and did not have to cut him since we were not going to be big spenders in FA anyway

do you really think we cut ware to sign mclain and mincey?

no, we cut him as a favor to him
so he could sign with another team before the FA dollars had dried up
another report said that denver had also offered the same deal to jared allen that they offered to ware

we had all the leverage

DEN still had little incentive to trade for him though. I was just saying it was possible. If they were ready to blow everyone out of the water, having exclusive rights via a trade was a minimal advantage.

i am agreeing with you
we should absolutely have tried to trade for him if we did not want to keep him

Is it true that we could've traded ware and received something in return? We went directly from meeting with Ware to releasing him. Denver overpaid him so maybe we could've used other teams interest as leverage for a late round pick.

great idea, but when is the last time Jerry Jones has traded a player on the Cowboys roster.....he is usually on the other end trading the Cowboys future draft picks for a JAG....ala Roy Williams......Jerry Jones does not have a poker face...just big money

Done in one.

Why would another team pay 16 million for him this year when they can get him for about 10 million like the broncos.

People said that Ware did not have any leverage in these issues. I say he had all the leverage he needed since he already had a deal worked out and knew the cowboys would cut him if he did not take a pay cut.

Either way he is gone and it is done.

Well we did it for Roy Williams the receiver.....

Sorry couldn't resist.

I tend to agree with Norm. It doesn't sound like Dallas tried, but maybe they did. They would have had to play hardball with Ware a little bit, but I think they could have gotten something for him.

I know people want to say "Oh no one would take him because of his salary"......you could have worked that out before hand. A team trading for Ware has no signing bonus commitments, so re-do the contract as part of the deal.

Convert his $12 million dollar salary this year into say, an $8 million SB over three years, with a $4 million base this year, an $8 million base in year two and $10 million in year three.

Yearly cap hits.....$6.66 million, 10.66 million and 12.66 million. You can cut after two years with a cap hit of $2.66 million.

Guarantee years 1 and 2. You get a 3 year, 30 million contract with $20 million guaranteed which, I think, is what he got with Denver.

A guy signed in 1 day for $20 million guaranteed had to have a market for his services. You're telling me the Jets wouldn't have thrown their 4th from TB over? Maybe a 3 or 4 from Cleveland? A four from the Jags?

They got a 7th for Dante Rosario and they couldn't get a thing for Ware?

I read we basically allowed him to gauge his value and then we said sorry too much.

That is not what you do when you want to trade someone. Or something you do if you are not desperate to get out of a bad contract.
