Next season RJ as Head Coach, Norval as OC....DC to be named later...

I like it. I don't think Norv would have a problem with OCing for his former QB either.

That would be fine, but then what does RJ offer? His forceful personality?

One thing though -- I wonder if he would want to work for RJ. I remember him reportedly telling Jerry when he interviewed for HC that he didn't think Jason was ready to call plays yet. Some even said that was a problem for Jerry.

Of course, when you're unemployed, things change.

While we're talking about it, I wonder if John Fox or -- speaking of glory days reunions -- Jack Del Rio would DC if they got fired. Especially Del Rio. I've always liked his teams' very physical style of play, even if he is a 43 guy.

Now, that's not to say that Turner doesn't have value. I just look at the way that his team snuck into the playoffs in the worst division in football last year (with an 8-8 record, nonetheless) and his team is tied with the Raiders in the win department this year. All with Norv running the offense. The Chargers aren't playing great this season and they're loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball. If that's all Norv can squeeze out of THAT group, I'd prefer he stay far, far away from Valley Ranch.

Substitute Wade Phillips for Turner in the above and that's our exact situation on defense. Judging a head coach coordinating his area of expertise is usually a challenging situation and it really needs to be evaluated with the idea in mind what it is. It is a hard situation and it is unfair to downgrade their work as "coordinator" with the knowledge they are supposed to run the rest of the team as well.

As a head coach, Turner is average at best, much like Phillips is as a head coach. But taken separately and in their coordinator roles, you'd be hard pressed to find better.

Who can say with a straight face they wouldn't want him here mentoring Romo?

A.J. Smith might be tempted to clean house in S.D. if Spanos lets him do it. That would free up Ron Rivera. That would be a great pair of coaching additions if that were the case.

Norv has been a great OC everywhere he has been. Some people are just not head coaches. He would be great in Dallas and you can bet he would have ran it more than 6 times in the 2nd half at Denver!

Huh? So we'd take basically two fired coordinators from the same declining team?

What makes people think Rivera is so great?

I'd only look into Rivera as a positional coach. If he's back to coaching LBs maybe, but I have no issue with Reggie Herring. Rivera as a coordinator? Big-time pass.

considering Romo needs some coaching I would say norv would be an excelent choice. Norv always seems to get the best out of his Qb's. Not so much the rest of the team, but His Qb's are always playing good.

Why on earth not?

Suddenly we are going to be all picky when we've employed a twice-fired head coach for three years who never coached a championship defense as a coordinator and failed to win a playoff game as a head coach?

Keep in mind, both options were with the assumption that Garrett would take over in 2010. I could think of much worse in terms of two coordinators than Turner and Rivera.

I personally don't have an issue with how Rivera has performed in San Diego. Last year he was without Merriman and this year he lost Williams very early.

If you can come up with another defensive coordinator candidate who has relevant 3-4 experience that's better, I'd be willing to be convinced.

To borrow Chocolate Lab's all-compassing statement, what makes everyone think Reggie Herring is so great and ready to be a coordinator? Is it because he's "fiery" and bellows a lot?

No, thanks. Get some new, young blood.
Our GM doesn't believe in new, young blood. Unless they are in the family portrait that is. New, young blood would require outside the box thinking, something he rarely does and even when he ventures out of his comfort zone, the results aren't that special.

ONLY if the new Head Coach hired him.

No more coordinators hired by the GM slash Owner slash Megalomaniac.

Now why do you have to be all difficult and put impossible conditions into play here?

All of that aside, I think Garrett would likely be interested in Turner for certain. Rivera possibly as well if he carried references.

We missed the boat on that one last year in an effort to save Brian Stewart's feelings. Capers would have been an excellent candidate.

As far as Rivera goes, he's a 4-3 disciple through and through. He's doing the best he can with his limited experience in the 3-4, but I would rather pilfer an assistant from a staff that has actually had some success in the 3-4. That being said, I'm not sure who that guy is. So my attempt to convince you has fallen short, I suppose.:

The amount of disrepect Jason Garrett gets on this forum confounds me in so many ways. He's doing more than Turner this year with a less talented offense.

I've read in more than a few places that what sets a coordinator apart is his feel for the game. Playcalling is a skill that Jason still needs to develop.

He's got the X's and O's part down, but he needs to mesh that a little better with the flow of the game...and not outsmart himself in the process.

Always wise.

Jason Garrett.

He is the next HC of Dallas Cowboys.

So let it be written... so let it be done.

I believe Jerry is going to back him... and when I say back him I mean Garrett will probably get a long term deal.

This organization needs stability.

Are you saying SD offense is more talented than Dallas? Or vice-versa?

Not sure what you mean.

Anyone think Mike Nolan maybe deserves another chance as a head coach?
