Not enough Elite QB’s to go around

Eli Manning has 2 SB rings. He beat Tom Brady TWICE to get those rings. Well...he beat a Tom Brady led team twice and a team who had one of the best coaches of all time coaching it. He made crucial and timely throws to do it. Never was favored to win a SB....took some temas with average seasons to the SB......yet, no one would EVER call him elite.

Justin Herbert and Josh Allen have done NOTHING in this league. Haven't won a SB or even appeared in one. But they are elite. Why? Because they "have a arm".

The elite talk is just ridiculous. Its a term talking heads created to fill air time on slow days.

I agree elite is thrown around way too much
Few guys are elite in football or any other sport
Most are average or above, some are good to really good but few are elite
I don’t think winning a SB makes a QB elite since it’s a team sport and they are only a part of the reason their team won
More importantly the chances of getting an elite QB is so slim it’s basically luck. Having the ability to get the right pick in the right year
Teams win Super Bowls and I think in most Super Bowls defenses were a bigger factor than offenses

So what is a elite QB then? How do we determine what a elite QB is without factoring in their team accomplishments?
 
It's hard to say what's elite and what's not but there are at least 12 qbs who are better than dak rn

The problem isn't having a Elite QB, the problem is the NFL league has made passing such a strong part of the game that it makes having one of the top 5 "elite" QB's more important than any other position. I know the QB has in years past always been the main component, but you didn't need a 4000 yard a season QB to win the title. I guess I just miss the smash mouth football of ages ago when you could beat the crap out of a offensive who tried to be ticky tacky. Remember when the middle of the field was no mans land because you are getting punished catching in that area.

Thats a little bit of a context stretch though. You’re ignoring the probability of the event to highlight an anomaly.

How many of the SB teams in the last 40 years still win if Trent Dilfer is their QB for the playoff run? Just 1? Maybe 2 if he was Dallas’s starting QB in that Bills blowout win.

How many still win if it was Rodgers instead of the QB they had? 35 at minimum. There is a definite formula for increasing your probability of seeing a title.

The Trent Dilfer outlier gives some fans hope. If Trent Dilfer can be an anomaly and get carried to a Super Bowl then so can Dak. It gives them something to hold on to.

It's the same as the "Tom Brady was a 6th round pick" outlier to make them feel better about the Cowboys wasting the past 15 years on undrafted/4th round talent at the QB position.

It's all coping mechanisms to make themselves feel better about the situation.

Yea but IMO the bigger story and point of this thread is most of the league doesn’t have Elite QB’s. Maybe 4-6 teams . But yet we still have over half of the league which contend for the playoffs with 14 teams now making it.

So, this notion that an Elite QB is your only chance isn’t a viable argument anymore.

Most fans even some of Daks most ardent critics would still place him in the middle to upper half of the leagues QB’s. Which is enough to build around .

Exactly right. Winning, or even getting to a SB is very difficult. A lot of things have to happen. No matter how good you are, no one is giving you anything. Others want that same trophy. You may never see a ring no matter how good you are.

Brady was very fortunate to have Belichick, and vice versa. Or else he could be sitting in GB with one ring. But the one thing these elite QBs usually offer their team, is that they are more often than not in contention every year.
 
It's much more likely find an elite QB than it is to field an elite defense.

I'd rather look for 1 guy that can lead your team to victories with a good defense instead looking for 5 or 6 guys all playing elite together to make up for the QB's deficiencies.

You think finding an elite QB is hard? It's 10x harder to field an elite defense.

There could be as many as 3 or 4 elite QBs in the NFL at once, but an actual true elite defense don't come around very often.

Watch them on the field. Dan Marino was a great QB. So was Warren Moon, and I thought John Elway was great before he won those two Super Bowls.

Imagine the 70s Steelers today after paying their offense? No way they have that defense. That D would be trash. That's the one thing the salary cap has taken away. The assembly of truly great teams. They were fun to watch when they weren't beating the Cowboys. I don't mean the Steelers, they were never fun to watch, I mean great teams in general.
