Not sold on Spencer

There are some guys on our defense that we do not have to worry about at all:

Ware
Ratliff
Jenkins
Spencer

We have others (like Newman) who are very good players, but those 4 I listed are our 4 best defenders and should not be concerns this offseason.

I'll would be all giddy if we trade our first and Bennett for the 1st overall pick to take Suh.
Trade a first and a possible stud, for one of the most impressive DT prospects in years.

I've created a basic formula for judging a player's pass rush ability that goes like this...

(Sacks*3 + QB Hits*1.5 + Pressures) / (Total Snaps*.55)

The idea is that a sack is at least twice as impactful as a QB hit, which is slightly more impactful than a pressure. Multiply total snaps by .55 in order to get an approximation of how many pass plays the player was involved in. The total number is a percentage that shows how often a pass rusher is effective.

Example scores for 3-4 OLBS would be...

Ware - 21.9%
Dumerville - 19.1%
Woodley - 16.9%
Matthews - 16.1%
Spencer - 15.2%
Harrison - 14.7%
Porter - 11.0%

Spencer is a difference maker, there's no question about it.

Excellent!

Spencer is one of the Cowboys best young players. And to think some people wanted him gone when he was arrested for the bar incident last year. We have some impatient, fickle fans at the Zone.

This guy has been making plays all over the field before he started getting the sacks. Other than Rat and Ware he was the most important part of our defense. I really have to question what were you watching if you think he got his sacks by being unblock. Wow!

That's very interesting.

It's not potential if you only see it when he shows it. That's him actually doing it.

To the OP: no, we wouldn't want to trade our number one pick and a budding star playing under a reasonable contract at one of our most important positions on defense for a bank-breaking rookie who's never played a down in the NFL and who can hope someday to develop into the sort of player we've got in Spencer. Good question, though.

Couldn't have said it better myself..........Bravo, sir.

According to that thought process the same can be said about Felix and Jenkins in their respective positions.

Why would you want to get rid of someone who is coming into his own only to draft someone who hasn't shown anything at this level.

I don't get this at all.

You say that like this isn't a really positive thing. I say congratulations that you don't.

I couldn't disagree more.

And that play you're talking about where the RB turned his head and Spencer dropped back into coverage, recognized the RB wasn't paying attention or running a route and then blew by him for the sack was genius. We'd call that Football IQ, not luck.

Thank you sir, its not everyday that i get congratulated for NOT understanding something. :D

Spencer isn't going anywhere, Wade absolutely loves the guy... He's going to have a monster year in 2010. Ware and Spencer will be the best duo in football, mark that down somewhere.

OP- The trade scenario is reckless and there was likely little thought to it (this ain't Madden). First off Suh is a DT, we have a Pro-Bowl NT in Ratliff already, so you are just trying to draft and pay a guy a boat-load of cash for a backup. Secondly, as ppl have mentioned there is no one on this team that can step in for Spencer the guy is a beast opposite Ware. I don't know what games you've been watching but Spencer is always in the QB's face and if he ain't getting sacks he's getting pressure and QB hits in addition to stopping the run. I really don't understand the skepticism on Spencer because the guy has become a defensive force opposite Ware (Peter King has him in his All-Pro Team opposite Ware, and I respect King when he says something like that). You must be evaluating ppl on just raw stats which is something that doesn't really matter when it comes down to winning games, watch the film Spencer is as disruptive as Ware and Ratliff.

Burger King sometimes misses the obvious like most commentators but his reasoning for putting Spencer on his All Pro team was spot on. He explained it well and made a very good case.

OK if you want to go Madden- trade Spencer for a top pick to get a top LT and sign Peppers to replace him. Happy now?
