Notes from OTAs Today

In many instances last season, when they got gashed by the run it was not due as much to being blown of the line as it was technique. David Irving would continue to get trapped when he would blow l through the gap. They were not blowing him off the ball, they just let him take himself out of the game.

Irving could have been much stronger against the run without gaining a pound. He needed to recognize the situations better.

True, but I don't think that it's all on one guy and simply technique either. If it was, the answer and fix is simple. Don't put him out there against the run.

I think that it showed a key flaw in this defense. Lack of a concentrated run stuffing presence, and an up the field tendency that can be exploited.

Broaddus has been on the Ward train since they made the trade. Why, I don't know. But it's reminiscent of his Chaz Green bandwagon of last year, when despite all evidence to the contrary, he continued to push that scrub.

His credibility died on that hill.
His cred died in the 2014 preseason when he said Weems would beat out Parnell as the Swing Tackle.

I think the biggest takeaway from what you are saying right now is Sean Lee was missing in all of those games we got gashed by the run. Gurley wasnt doing very well until he went out in the second half and then he went to town on us.

It was a key factor, no doubt. But there were also games like Denver when it didn't matter too.

Go take a look at some of their best run defense performances. They came against the worst lines and running games in the league.

At time is has been the run as well CJ Anderson put 121 on the Cowboys in that butt whipping, Gurly 121, GB Arron Jones 125, Coleman at Alt gashed us pretty good in that game. Looking at overall numbers on the season yeah we were #8 but what I saw was a defense that still has to improve overall and especially late in games.
That was week 2,4,5.
After week 5 we did not allow another 100 yard rusher.
The only other rusher to top 85 yards was Jay Ajani with 91.
Fans want to fix problems that largely do not exist anymore.

I don't get caught up in pass defense or run defense for me it is Defense!!!! A defensive unit works as a whole not DL vs Secondary they work in unison. 11 guys working as 1 unit.

They do of course, but if an offense can't pass against you, they're going to try to run it. Both things go hand in hand.

You can be the greatest pass defense ever and it's not worth much if opponents can run on you all day. I remember that's exactly how we were able to become one of the few teams to beat the Seahawks in Seattle.

So Dallas allowed ONE -100 yard rusher with Sean Lee on the field.

Week 2 when we were just awful in all areas.

Does it matter if it's one guy or more than one guy if the opponent puts up 200 yards and blows you out?

Not to me it doesn't.

Denver in my opinion was all on coaching. Garrett lost the team, his job especially that game was to keep them focused. They bought into the hype after beating NYG and went into that game thinking it would be a cake walk. It wasnt.

To me, that loss was as inexplicable and out of left field as the Kansas City win was. Never saw either of them coming and the team never looked quite as bad nor quite as good for the rest of the season.

I agree. Lets do what everyone else does. Blame it on Dak!

Defense as a whole is a problem again you want to break it down as secondary vs DL yet they compliment each other. Atlanta especially in the 2nd half started hitting Dallas with some very effective runs Coleman put up 83 but as a whole Atlanta had 132 rushing with. If you get right down to it Dallas was ranked 16th in yards per carry at 4.1 while top defensive units were in the 3's per carry. Hell you can play good run defense for 3 qrts but if in the 4th you start getting gashed it was still a factor.

I knew Connor Williams would struggle with power moves, he better put some muscle mass on quick fast and in a hurry. Looks too thin to play Guard.

Why is Chaz Green still on the team. If their biggest fear is having to put Chaz Green in the game again then why is he even here? It is mind boggling some of the decisions they clowns continue to make.
Why would he not be on the team?
He’s cheap and has experience. Not many guess you could add for training camp any better
Being on the roster for camp doesn’t mean being on the roster after camp but he’s about as good as any other guy you could bring in for camp

Garrett is responsible for all good and bad but fact is players get paid big money to go out and perform on the field, so yes it is on the coach but it damn sure is on the players. Coaches do not play, players do and they need to do their jobs. For me it gets a bit old letting high priced players off the hook and claiming it was all the coach. Garrett did not miss a single tackle, he did not blow a single coverage nor did he turn the ball over players did. Yes he is held accountable but so are players, these are suppose to be professionals

I think anyone who studied the player knew he needed to add mass
That’s not gonna happen before this season but I expect him to be 10-12 lbs heavier and much stronger by next camp
This year that will be his weakness but long term that’s an easy fix

And did you take notice of the fact that the team just tried and failed to re-sign Terrell McClain? A key factor in that #1 ranking?

Sorry, but it's far from "excellent".

"Excellent" doesn't get mauled for over 200 yards while getting blown out 37-9 at home by the Eagles.

"Excellent" doesn't give up 178 yards to mediocre running backs while getting demolished in Denver.

"Excellent" doesn't let Todd Gurley run all over you for 121 yards.

"Excellent" doesn't allow a Green Bay rookie to gash them for 121 yards and over 6 yards a carry.

"Excellent" doesn't give up 132 yards to the Falcons when they demolish you.

And "excellent" doesn't allow a washed-up Marshawn Lynch to average nearly 5 yards a carry.
Cherry picking games from last year with all the injuries and suspensions just to support your agenda I see.

I agree 100 percent. I am just saying. As a coach, his JOB is to keep the players focused. To not let them buy into the hype.
