Now comes the problem

This is nothing new . . . what to do at DE was a problem long before DeMarcus ever left.

Good point. With Spencer's injury and Ware getting older, it was going to need to be addressed.

Unfortunately the whole damn line needs to be addressed at the same time.

Funny, but typical Zonage narrative.

A narrative like our typical groundhog day like 8-8 seasons under Garrett with his piss poor clock / game management costing us 2 - 4 games a season??? That is the only narrative I have seen. He has proven he is in over his head and Jerry admitted he was training him. If we are going to employ a coach in training, we might as well go for the best draft picks we can get cause we sure as heck ain't winning anything significant with him at the helm. The proof has been on display the last 3 years to all but blind homers.

Exactly, not just because this team won't be improved but the NFC is a beast conference, it's just hard to compete right now.
What? Its Seattle and everyone else.

The NFC is about as terrible as it gets. The AFC isn't far behind.

But that's not a bad thing, build this puppy for the future not next season.

Ahhh ha! That's it. The problem is, Jerry has been too focused on the now! It's not likely to happen. Focus on the building a strong "team."

I'm not really sure what Dallas Cowboys you are watching, but they switched the entire defensive scheme last year without having a plan in place.

Never said it was well-laid. Just not something that crept up this morning.

Sure they had a plan. It just didn't include every DL getting hurt.

How? The team drafted him and told him to gain weight to play the 5tech.

Has he done that? Depending on the source, he is between 282-284lbs. You expect him to hold up as a two gap player on the interior? He would be one of lightest, if not the lightest, DTs in the entire league. This doesn't even take into consideration that we have an undersized, injury-prone MLB who needs shielding.

If the defensive line would have gone through 2013 relatively healthy, it was still going to be a problem area on the roster. Here's to hoping we stockpile both sides of the line of scrimmage. After that, continue the accumulation of big bodies up front. And then, get more.

I don't see Crawford or Selvie as problems. They are young, cheap and have potential. Isn't that what everyone is always screaming for?

Agree, I don't think a rotation at DE of Crawford, Selvie, a low cost FA and a draft pick from the 1st or 2nd round would be unreasonable at all.

That said, I think Ware's replacement is someone the team has in their sights and has already had back channel communications with. People here went nuts about the OG position in the draft last year but the team knew they had something in Ron Leary and had the background communications with Brandon Moore and Brian Waters to know they could bring them in during camp. I think they cut Ware with a specific replacement in mind.

I was wrong about them cutting Ware, I thought he would take a pay cut and the Cowboys would give him something like 2/15 or 3/22. I'll eat my crow, but the fact the did cut Ware points me toward a couple of things -

- the medical reports on Ware have to be worse than either side is letting on.

- the team has already had wink and nod conversations with his replacement (or Melton and/or Hatcher)

- the team wanted to clear out 2015 payroll so they can backload contracts to FAs and the inhouse guys like Dez and Tyron

- the team is higher on guys like Crawford and Bass than most think, and are bullish on the DL prospects in this draft.

But that's not a bad thing, build this puppy for the future not next season.

The future will need a QB so by the time the team assembles a strong defense, it'll be time to look for the most important, and hardest to find, piece of the puzzle.

SEA and SF didn't have much of a problem there :)

It's going to have to happen. The defense is a full rebuilding project along the front four now.

This team will not compete for a Super Bowl for at least two years.

This team is not competing for a Super Bowl no matter what for the next 2 years. There is way too many other issues besides Dline. Secondary is abysmal. Our best LB is made of glass.

Losing Ware means nothing. Even with him, we haven't went anywhere. Why is everyone freaking out? There needs to be a house cleaning. A new direction is needed in many areas.
