I just don't see it, i.e. Crawford getting the franchise tag.

I expect he'll be extended for a far less cost.

Crawford reminds me of Chris Canty, physically he has the attributes most teams like in a D-lineman, someone will over pay him like Canty.

Murray wasn't, isn't and never will be worth $10M for 1 year. Especially coming off the workload season last year. We spent several months debating this issue in here (with varing amounts per year) with that same conclusion every time.

Why on earth would any player who is central to the squad they play on with this team be inclined to sign cheaper now than more expensive later?

This is a business, and the players have learned to think of it as so. They hire people to negotiate for them. And outside of the immature, who feel social media is appropriate for spouting off, the pay help will get a good contract, if the player has value and the negotiator is skillful.

In that light, your post is more of a fan boy comment, dismissing the hard reality of this game as a business. Sorry. Just seems to be an emotional post. Which I find sort of rare from you.

How would folks feel about an offer in the area of 5 years $35 million with guarantees in the $15 million range?

If you look at other DT contracts I would say 5 mil a yr is a good deal got him and the team with some incentives if he does live up to his potential. You are buying potential and he has shown flashes of that potential
Someone put up a link to sport trac showing DT salaries and looking at those to me 5 mil is the number but to get that done now, I suspect you would need some incentives. That gives him money relative to what he has shown and protection if he continues to develope and turns into the player he has the potential too. I kinda like the idea of a player having the incentive to work hard and fulfill his potential with the security that he will get paid if he does.

That would be more than Jason Hatcher got coming off double digit sacks. Which would be more in line with what I think Crawford could get next year with a great season with 9 sacks or so.

I'm just seeing too many 'OK' defensive linemen suddenly getting 'great lineman' money. The recent re-signings by the Saints and Steelers seem to be way overpaying.

It's just the economics with the rookie scale. Overall salaries have to go up and there are not that many truly great players across 32 teams. $10m is half of what great pays nowadays. Teams have a floor to contend with.

Yeah, but those two teams - Pittsburgh and New Orleans - look to be hitting the cap ceiling rather than the cap floor.

And I don't consider either of the two Camerons involved to be worth nearly what the teams seem willing to pay.

I think Brees days are numbered and people are going to be 'what happened to the Saints.' They didn't want to pay Graham and they gave Wilson the best receiver he's ever had. Saints ownership has problems.

Very true. If they were going to blow it up, they should have done it. It seems they went half way and didn't finish the job and now they'll slowly deteriorate for several years instead of bottoming out and rebuilding more quickly.

Both of those guys were 1st round picks who were both given their 5th year option. Jordan has 20 sacks in the past two years with Heyward 12.5 the past two years. Both with 7.5 last season. Both playing 3-4 end. I don't think Crawford is there yet. Maybe with a heck of a year its possible. Now the escalating salary cap is the thing that could throw his salary out of whack.

Sportrac had an article that showed Heyward may have been underpaid since they valued him as a top 5 3-4 DT. His value was closer to 13m per.

TCrawford has impressed but he doesn't have the stats or film to back up a top 5 ranking yet.

That is why he might take a 4/24m with 10m signing bonus as opposed to waiting and risking a poor year or injury. If he plays well he will have another contract in 3 seasons and can really score big.

I was thinking close to that... 5/25 with a 10M signing bonus.

Crawford has elite quickness and presses NFL guards like a pro. He will also be two years removed from the achilles reconstruction. It's very reasonable to think he could improve athletically this year. I'm very fine with giving him Carr's money and moving on there long term.

But it would have to be a new deal, not an extension.

He wouldn't play out this year at 675K and give a discount.

It would have to be a true 10m signing bonus and almost 18m guaranteed.

If plays out he will make 675k, 8m?, 10m?
If takes a new deal he gets 11m, 3m, 4m, 6m

Agreed. It would need to be a new deal.

I want to publicly apologize for my post. I tried to post the OP's comments and ended up posting yours. I meant that for Fuzzy. Not that I think you are overly emotional when you post.

So please accept my apology. My only excuse s it was the crack of dawn and I needed to scoot to get to work on time.

Which means no excuse at all.

Mea culpa.

you really have to hope Randy Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence become play makers because Dallas really can't afford another mega deal and Hardy will want big contract after season.

Hardy IMO needs to stay. players like dont come around often. Hes already a leader on this team, showing it on the field and vocally
