They would improve it if they just enforced the rules like illegal OL downfield or "legal" pick plays, as they're called today. The targeting rule was a joke as I see that in every game not called.
The NFL has a tough call to make. One of the complaints and reasons for viewership drop from where it used to be is the length of the games and too many stop downs. Now, they're considering adding more?
Harbaugh makes some good points but his reference to fans leaving the stadium knowing they'd seen a fair game does little to address the real challenge, fans with remotes in their hands. When I feel a game is jerky or slow moving, I exit and find something else. Attention spans are not expanding, they're shrinking and more rules and more stops, regardless of the justification, is just asking for more tune out.
I never tune out , I just get up and do something for minute or 2, the problem is they spend too much time on the review!
The way I see it , it should take 30 seconds or less look at each angle once and make a call.
if it is so close you have to look at it 30 times then the call on the field should just stand.
any call that is clearly wrong should be quick decision, and at same time have someone else already working on if overturned,
where the ball is spotted and clock time. That should already be done by time they over rule it.
So on close or unclear calls , let it stand as called.
Also stop making rules that require too much judgement, like make a football move , going to ground etc.
funny I thought the QB rule last year was a good rule, but most hated it including dummys like aikman.
Then when teams lose qb's same people whine about it,. especially if it is their qb.
There are not enough good qb's to go around now, so better we dont hurt or knock out the few that are playing.
Seeing a team play with their bkup qb is really boring to me.
The other thing is just the constant changing of rules, and I think that is more irritating than the rules themselves.
every year new rules that are not needed. As soon as we adjusted to the catch rule they changed it again,.
and even announcers dont know if it is a catch or not, and that is not good.
