Odd choice of words in Garrett's criticism of Carter

So what did Carter, whose had some issues this year in pass coverage himself say: "I thought he landed out of bounds, so that's why I kind of stopped on the play. Then he ran in for the touchdown. It is what it is." ​

This rings of some of the rumor echo's we've heard about Carter coming out college. Is JG just talking about this one play or is he revealing a deeper criticism of Carter overall?

Carter is a player who will never reach his potential and Dallas should look to replace him as soon as next year.

It reminds of the Lions game on the last play where Stafford scored while all the defensive lineman stood around, not in their set, not ready, etc.

Almost seems like some sort of pervasive stupidity that permeates the team.

Garrett was referring to college rules vs NFL rules on a downed player. You don't need to touch the downed player in college.
That is all.

Well this isn't the first time Carter made bone headed play, there has been several this year which led to his benching before. Heath made mistake as well, but I don't lie nonchalant comment of "it is what it is" by Carter.

I think Garrett is talking this play. Don't guess if a guy is out of bounds bend over touch him play is over but to assume ended up costing us a TD. I felt the same way this is not college. Overall I saw a lot of good plays by Carter during the game. I expect him to learn from his mistake and put it behind him and move forward. To me that is what ball players do. You make mistakes you learn and you don't get down on yourself, you continue to work, improve and move on.

No, not usually. I just don't like the player, never have. Even his own coach (Butch Davis) tried to avoid talking about him during the draft.

Because it's not like the other options are appealing.
He's been hard on Carter and even benched him.
Then he's seen him make some plays in his return.

It's clear Carter is sensitive and emotional but very talented.
some played respond better to praise than kicks in the butt.
Dallas has to work with him this year and slowly work on replacing him if the mental part of his game doesn't get better.

But make no mistake, right now they need him badly.
Garrett has to try to hold onto this kid.
After the season they can look at all their options.

It is called 'situational awareness' and both Carter and Heath failed big time. Heath more so than Carter because he as facing the guy on the ground. Only the slightest of excuses for Carter was that he had his back to him when he fell to the ground.

I miss the Carter of last year. Moving the defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3 seems to have set Carter back a notch or 2.

Hopefully he turns it around. He is inconsistent right now, just like the team.

Yep, Carter wasn't the only one.. Heath rolled right into the play.... Can't single out anybody and if you do, Carter can say, well Heath didn't do crap as well...

And Carter made some good plays yesterday, too.

You must have missed the report one of the local Dallas radio personalities did after that draft. In public, Davis said some good things, but in private, he was not offering a glowing recommendation. Once again, never liked the player.

I'm less concerned about not touching the guy and more concerned about how bad he looked in coverage on that play.

The not touching the guy down part can easily be fixed. His problems in coverage have proven more difficult to remedy.

Despite his obvious struggles this year and him not ascending to be the player that many of us hoped for or expected, he is still one of the team's best options.

But if things don't get better, I doubt he sticks around long term.
