Odd choice of words in Garrett's criticism of Carter

You must have missed the report one of the local Dallas radio personalities did after that draft. In public, Davis said some good things, but in private, he was not offering a glowing recommendation. Once again, never liked the player.

Yeah, can't say I put much stock in the "reporting" of local Dallas radio personalities.

The radio guy asked him if he would want him on his team and he basically repeated the same things you just posted. Not once in his reply did he say he would want him on his team. That says a lot IMO.

Yep, Carter wasn't the only one.. Heath rolled right into the play.... Can't single out anybody and if you do, Carter can say, well Heath didn't do crap as well...

But then we wouldn't have the ability to scapegoat carter lol

Sorry but I call BS here.
I didn't like the Carter pick at that time.
I thought he was soft and a coverage player in a contact position. --and a better 4-3 WLB then anything else.
Obviously my scouting report was fairly terrible....

But Butch Davis has long ties in Dallas and Dallas is more swayed by coaching reports than about any organization in football.

If Davis was warning teams off Carter I SERIOUSLY doubt he'd have been a Garrett/Jones pick.

Dallas puts more guys in the box than anyone since Garrett was hired.

The concern with Carter was his pending rookie redshirt due to injury, not character or talent.

Whatever it is, he sure doesn't look like a good fit here, on or off the field (don't forget he's already gone on record, publicly questioning the defensive staff). I wouldn't be shocked at all if they try to unload Carter to another team before letting him hit free agency once his contract is up. I would expect another (almost) all-defense draft next year, the same as when Parcells went to a 3-4.

Oh really? Was this before or after Davis referred to Carter as a "rare" linebacker and a "phenomenal" football player and kid?

http://cowboysblog.***BANNED-URL***/2011/05/bob-sturm-butch-davis-on-bruce.html/

That left a mark.
I would not mix Bruce Carter up with some of those dingalings that were at Carolina during the Davis era. He is suppossedly a really good guy.

And btw, he made several very good plays yesterday.

Nevertheless, overall, I am disappointed in him this year so far.

I think in a cover 2 4-3 Carter is a MLB.
In what we have the talent to run which is a 4-3 over with man coverage I think he is simply a poor fit.

He has clearly struggled since he bulked up to play 3-4 ILB with coverage.
Getting badly beaten by a slow TE yesterday had to be frustrating and is why he quit on the play.
If you can't cover that guy you're in trouble.

With Wilber looking good at SLB I "think" Carter may be back on the bench when Durant and Lee return.
Or relegated to part-time duty so as to avoid being targeted by wheel routes.

Not sure what his value is around the league in trade to be honest.
He can certainly start at a 3-4 ILB but those guys aren't highly valued unless they are sensational.

Call it what you want. I am am not privy to the inner working of the Dallas war room at draft time so I cannot comment on the matter. All I know is that there were rumblings from unknown inside sources after the pick that it was a huge risk regardless of the injury.

Considering he is a Cowboy, however, and a current starter, I think the only thing that is currently relevant is that he is not meeting expectations from a constancy standpoint. Once again: not a fan.

this may be true
it may also be true that dallas thought they were getting first round talent in round 2 and were willing to overlook some issues

Carter also made some damn good plays in this game. Yes bonehead play on the TD no excuse, but to throw out the rest of the game? Come on. Players make mistakes that is a fact of life they are not perfect.

Carter is great at attacking the LOS. He is a down hill LB and asking him to cover in the flat or on crossing routes so far has not been good.

At times but then LB also get caught in mis matches. I don't care what LB you put out there vs Witten we win that battle more times than not so why would it be different if you put our LB in a mismatch?

I am not really one of those people who tries to make too much of player quotes or tries to link the quotes as being representative of some aspect of the player's personality. However, I don't like that answer from Carter. He pretty obviously was not out of bounds dude, and you screwed up. It could also just be that I really hate that platitude, "it is what it is". :p

Saw this on ESPN:

Later Garrett said, "From a habit standpoint, you ain't in college anymore. You're in the National Football League and you simply got to get your hands on the guy."

So what did Carter, whose had some issues this year in pass coverage himself say: "I thought he landed out of bounds, so that's why I kind of stopped on the play. Then he ran in for the touchdown. It is what it is."

This rings of some of the rumor echo's we've heard about Carter coming out college. Is JG just talking about this one play or is he revealing a deeper criticism of Carter overall?

I also saw Carter makes some decent stops in the running game so like Garrett always says..it's a work in progress.

With all these injuries and changes on the 4-3..there is going to be a year or two to get it installed..draftt players to fill more holes and probably some FA signings to come.

Meanwhile..if they can do anything to slow the other team enough to allow the offense to play and decidde the outcome..that's the plan I see.

And in the NFC East..that could be enough.

We'll see.

Based on recent history, this play not costing the Cowboys the game is downright shocking

How would Carter know? After the catch he looked up in frustration. I do not like excuses.

Yep, on all counts. The guy's an athletic freak, so it's no mystery why they were interested in him as an injured second rounder. They should have been. He also wasn't a finished product, and he also obviously has some stuff to sort out mentally if he's going to have a long career as a starter in this league. At the same time, he's got potential to be a pro-bowl caliber linebacker, which the team was also obviously aware of. He's a work in progress, like many second round picks in the middle of their rookie contracts.

I hope he works it out fast, though. If this defense has any chance of addressing what's absolutely knee capped us against good QBs, it's going to come from Ware getting healthy, Lee getting back in the lineup, our press corners staying on the field and playing at that top level we've seen a couple of times this season, and Bruce Carter going from a borderline player with some significant focus issues to a legitimate force at that second level both in coverage and in run support. I'm not saying that's all going to happen, but it's going to have to happen over the next month or so if we're going to have anything more than a punch-lucky chance at an NFCE crown and a playoff run of any sort. I hope he sorts it out, because mental lapses like the one yesterday aren't going to cut it against an actual good team.
