You really have to go on a player by player or more importantly school by school basis when making a statement like "most players do (put on weight)".

Some schools seem to max out their players' strength while others don't. Nebraska under Osborne and Wisconsin of the last decade have seen this trend.

You also have to factor coaching into the equation when projecting where a player will be in three years. Tedford QBs showed that they had basically maxed out their potential because their mechanics were so sound (Leaf, Smith, Boller....).

But how do you know what Bush did at USC, or why? Was it coaching? Because obviously LenDale White didn't get that memo. Are you just making a blanket statment that USC has a great strength and conditioning program, because they have a great football team? Because correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't heard about USC's great weight program, and I live in SoCal.

To judge a strength and conditioning program, you have to look at what previous players have done after they left. Throw out the exceptions because no one can get through to everyone (someone like White is probably lazy) and look at the trends.

USC players don't seem to gain the type of weight your adding to Bush or at least those in Carroll's program haven't.

Well who are you talking about? I'd sure love for you to share your info with me.

Pete Carroll was hired in 2001. Matt Leinart was in one of Carroll's first recruiting classes. Same with Bush and White. The only guys I can think of off the top of my head who was a Carroll recruit who are worth anything in the NFL are Lofa Tatupu and Mike Williams, who were rookies last year. Tatupu transferred to USC and Williams only played 2 years. So from what I know, there's not enough data to make the judgment on USC's strength and conditioning.

Lol, this is great! When I made my mock draft about a week ago for the competition I put Williams going to Houston with the first pick! Man, I'm smart

Williams ain't the "sexy" pick, but that doesn't mean he's the wrong pick. Five years should tell the tale.

OK, found more info on a few more USC guys... Carson Palmer, Troy Polamalu, and Keary Colbert. Reason I didn't mention these guys before was because they were borderline Carroll players (they played for Carroll and Hackett).

Palmer was at 225 leaving USC. Now is 230.

Polamalu was 215. Now 212.

Colbert was 193. Now 200.

Mike Williams was 230, still there.

Tatupu was 225, now up to 238 (wow).

It's hard to make a judgment on these guys. There's just not enough Carroll Trojans in the NFL yet. If you want to make a judgment on how the players put on weight, this class is going to help you, but I don't think you can make that judgment yet. This year you have Leinart, Bush, White, Justice, Latui, Byrd, Bing... 4-5 first rounders, and all of them likely first day picks... easily the best draft class coming out of USC in years.

It is much more difficult to find a great 4-3 DE than it is to find a great RB. How many of the best RBs in the NFL right now have been high draft picks? Alternatively, how many of the best 4-3 DEs have not been high draft picks?

$50 says he suffers a major injury within the first 3 games. You just can't take pounding after pounding and keep getting back up.

idk, Bledsoe has been doing that basically his whole career :laugh2:

Yea, the same way the Colts were haunted by taking that Manning guy over the certified stud Ryan Leaf.

Williams helps their franchise more this year and in the near future than a part-time RB would.

it's not about Bush being a part-time runner, it's him going to have no holes to run behind

and they already have Dominick Davis, who's a pretty fine back in his own right

Well, this is from their current player card, 5'10" 221...

Shorter and more compact?? What are we arguing here? You said he doesn't have the size to be the full time RB... Once he puts on 10-15 pounds of muscle, he'll be about the average size for an NFL RB

being shorter and compact means you have a low center of gravity, and it allows you to bounce off hits better, but I disagree with the notion that Bush is too small to be an every-down back, or he wouldn't be a top-5 pick, he runs bigger than he is

Yeah I understood what he was saying, I was just wondering what his point was. First he said Bush didn't have the size, then he said that some of these smaller NFL RBs that were shorter than him basically were disregarded because they were more compact. So I was wondering if he thought Bush would have the size if he was bigger, more weight, or "shorter and more compact." Just didn't make much sense to me. When you say Bush "doesn't have the size" I assume you mean he's too small.

that or he's lithe, an injury waiting to happen in the NFL with how big and fast defenders are nowadays

just got this from a poster over at the texans forums, man they are depressed, a lot of them have cancelled their draft partys.

"I think we just became the laughing stock of the NFL, NFLEurope, NCAAF, High School Football, & PopWarner.

We could have traded down, got another #2, whoever's #1 and still got Williams. It was stupid to take him at #1, now we have to pay him like a #1."
