Officially the worst offseason ever?

One, the worst off-season ever was when Jimmy left and Barry Switzer was named HC. This franchise could have won 3 or 4 consecutive Super Bowls, something no one has done. It also started a Jerry Jones power trip that held this franchise back for a long time.

Second, this was a lame off-season. The good teams got better and we didn't; we maybe got younger. The free agent thing isn't "won't" it was "can't"... next year should be a different story.

This whole "losing 2/5 of the OL" is so absurd. You act like we lost Tyron and Frederick/Martin. Collins will be just fine. Last I checked, Free and Leary were not the reasons why this OL was at the top of the league. That's what happens when your core 3 are so good and you have to make sure to keep them on the roster. Quit overreacting.

We did not misplay the Romo situation. Romo was either going to play with us or retire (for now). What else could we have did?

David Irving had some flashes of good play but overall, he's just another guy right now. He's not as important as you say and he was wildly inconsistent.

You do realize players have companies that handle their autographs in that instance, right? You really think Dak was sitting in his room with his autograph machine? Be for real.

But I get it. Everything in today's times is either the best ever or worst ever. Chill out.

I am chill. But I am also realistic. The fact is we have lost 3 starting DBs and 2 starting OL to free agency (I take your point that Collins should be a good replacement, but it is a new position he has not played since college). We have also lost a key rotational player who I thought would ascend to starting LDE, Irving, to suspension. Now, we might lose another 2 starters - Wilson and Elliot - to suspension... that is a lot of turnover in one offseason. And IMO, with a first place schedule, means a very tough year ahead.

You have some very valid concerns and points.

The only thing I disagree with is your number two (2) concern and that is the secondary. We lost due to a lack of a pass rush. Those DBs can be replace. I'm glad the FO didn't waste any money on them who left.

But my big concern was why would they not address and upgrade the pass rush which was your fourth concern.

And losing our Guard to Denver really is a concern of mine as well.

I agree with you. I actually would not have re-signed any of the DBs we let go. But relying on rookies, or guys like Nolan Carroll, to replace them is risky. I love the talent of Awuzie and Lewis, but there will be a learning curve.

While New England reloaded for another Super Bowl, I can't help but feel like this offseason has gone off the rails for us. I am trying to be optimistic, and I love our core, but I fear that the tumult of this offseason will result in a pretty big step back on the field this year. And it will take another year for us to reach our Super Bowl potential. In a nutshell:

1. Jerry misplays the Romo situation and we get nothing for a franchise QB who still can play.
2. We make no free agent signings of note and lose 3/4 of our starting DBs (which I was OK with) and 2/5 of our starting OL.
3. We miss out on all of the speed pass rushers in the first round of the draft (and allow Atlanta to leapfrog us for the last one) and draft yet another LDE.
4. Our most promising pass rusher and disruptor, David Irving, gets suspended 4 games, continuing a pattern set by D Law and Gregory.
5. Our starting SLB, and best coverage LB, Damien Wilson, assaults a woman with his car and pulls a rifle on her friends. No doubt, he'll be suspended for a long time.
6. Our franchise RB may be suspended, according to John Clayton.
7. Even our choir boy QB and leader is accused of fraud, for selling memorabilia he did not sign by hand.

On top of this, we have a very difficult first place schedule. I am excited for our future. But, in all honesty, I expect to be diaappointed this season.

The 2009 offseason overrules any other (for the draft alone). Dallas Cowboys 2009 NFL Draft.

4/120 - Brandon Williams, DE/LB, Texas Tech

Dallas Cowboys 2009 NFL Draft

and people here vehemently defended that awful draft

Trading down multiple times in a talent-poor draft was GM Jerry at his worse.

I used to enjoy the David Buehler posts in a comical way. Sad he was probably the best player out of that draft. lol

Apart from the melodrama in the title, it seems like we get one of these threads every season now.

Jerry didn't misplay Romo at all, we never make big FA signings. We fill holes and draft. We did get one of the top DEs in the draft, right about where we should have been expected to get him. We don't know the story on Wilson yet, and the Elliott story is nothing unless a suspension is handed down. The only thing I think we won't be able to get past is the autopen thing.

LOL

Look no further than OP's track record before deciding to entertain this thread.

Other recent threads he started-

"Concerned no Taco tweets?"- OP concluding that Taco must suck because the OTA media tweets didn't have as many positive mentions of Taco in comparison to our rookie DB's.

"Does Chaz Green to LG mean Cooper has failed?"- Green took snaps at LG during OTA's. Conclusion? Cooper is a fail.

"So tired of these terrible offseasons"- Self explanatory. Although that thread is about a month old and lost steam. So instead of bumping that one OP started this one lol.

I think Dallas tried to get a deal on Romo but no takers and in the end outright released saved us more cap money
2nd Dallas was never going to pay on high priced FA
Draft overall I am happy with, were there other players I would have loved for the Cowboys to get? Of course but I can't say I am unhappy with the picks made by Dallas.
Suspensions fully agree and very disappointed in these players.

Zeke we will see what happens gut feeling I think he will not face punishment, again we will see
Dak, that in my view is a whole bunch of nothing.

The difference between us and the NFC East. All of our rivals made bold moves to improve their teams. We sat on our hands in free agency and drafted a redshirt second rounder. Our secondary needed an overhaul, and we re signed Mo and kept Carr instead. This is going to be a very frustrating year. As I've said before, this is not a playoff roster

And it will take another year for us to reach our Super Bowl potential. In a nutshell:

Nothing was misplayed. No team wanted Romo because he was going to ask for a good amount of money and no team could trust his back to stay healthy. It is what it is.

2. We make no free agent signings of note and lose 3/4 of our starting DBs (which I was OK with) and 2/5 of our starting OL.

We probably misplayed Free's retirement and thinking he was going to play another season. Leary was paid far more than he was really worth. The O-Line didn't miss much when Green was playing LT for Tyron and now Green is either the option at RT or LG. Collins is a far superior talent than Free or Leary (both of whom I thought were underappreciated). Essentially, we guessed wrong on Free staying, but we have excellent pieces in place to make the O-Line potentially *better* than it was in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The DB's were overpriced and limited. The corners couldn't play zone and Church could only play short zone and was getting slower (which is saying something. I'm always a bit nervous with starting rookies, but I think they are cheaper options that can play zone which I think is critical to playing good defense in the NFL.

3. We miss out on all of the speed pass rushers in the first round of the draft (and allow Atlanta to leapfrog us for the last one) and draft yet another LDE.

We got Taco Charlton and didn't lose any picks to get him.

4. Our most promising pass rusher and disruptor, David Irving, gets suspended 4 games, continuing a pattern set by D Law and Gregory.

Gregory was suspended for weed violations. D Law was suspended for PED's as well as Irving. It sucks, but Gregory is a different case all together.

5. Our starting SLB, and best coverage LB, Damien Wilson, assaults a woman with his car and pulls a rifle on her friends. No doubt, he'll be suspended for a long time.

A. He's innocent until proven guilty.

B. Unless he gets the book thrown at him, the most they can suspend him for is 4-games as a first time violator. It's in the CBA.

C. Just because PFF calls him the 'best coverage LB' doesn't make it so. He played very limited snaps because SAM LB's don't play much in today's game. And he was playing mostly short zone coverage.

6. Our franchise RB may be suspended, according to John Clayton.

He was also one of those 'There's a video of Dez that's 10 times worse than the Ray Rice video' reporters. He's a notorious Cowboys hater and like most at ESPN (yes, I know he was let go), has almost no credibility towards reporting accurately on the Cowboys.

I'll believe it when I see it.

7. Even our choir boy QB and leader is accused of fraud, for selling memorabilia he did not sign by hand.

It's not actually fraud. And we are really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find dirt on a guy that had his actual autographed signed by a machine instead of his own hand.

On top of this, we have a very difficult first place schedule. I am excited for our future. But, in all honesty, I expect to be diaappointed this season.

Schedule 'difficulty' before the season starts is a farce. We only play 2 games different from the rest of the division and those teams are likely to get worse while the other teams that the rest of the division plays are likely to get better.

The '04 offseason was far worse as our starting DT, Willie Blade, decided to not work out and got cut immediately and then this:

And I stand by that post and this one. We didn't make our defense better that offseason and it showed versus Green Bay when it mattered the most. We caught lightning in a bottle with Dak and made the playoffs (which no one could have predicted), but it was with a last place schedule and in spite of our defense. This year's offseason is worse because of the suspensions and because our rivals got comparably better on offense and we are relying on rookies and unproven players on defense. Again, I hope I am wrong and would be happy for you to show me this post next year.
