We have already determined that NFL scouting is a crap shoot....

Yeah, although you would be surprised how often the scouts are right or very close to being dead on.

Part of the reason the scouts are good is unlike the NBA, NFL scouts do look at college production and factor that in.

But therein lies the problem. A guy like Ogletree gets hurt and plays in a run oriented offense with a QB who isn't a very good passer and he doesn't get draft. Oh well, our gain.

The good thing is that at 6 ft. and 196 lbs., he's quick and still not a small receiver. Nice combination of size AND speed.

No, he isn't small.

Having Al Groh running the show doesn't help.
If you heard the interview with Irvin, Ogletree doesn't seem to be a fan either.

6' is bordering on small for an NFL WR.

The height of NFL receivers ranges from 5'9 (Steve Smith) to 6'6 (Plaxico "JailTime" Burress).

6'1/6'2 would be considered average size. 6'0 would be considered below average and small by NFL standards.

But with rules benefiting the passing game and wide receivers, I don't think height is that much of an issue. Think Steve Smith, Santana Moss, Laverneous Coles. All productive receivers and all under 6'0.

P.S. Wouldn't it be interesting and ironic that for all the noise Cowboys fans were making for Michael Crabtree that the best tree of this class ends up being Ogletree?

Ogletree is a great story right now for the Cowboys.

What was his situation at Virginia?

How did he slip through the cracks?

What do the coaches like about him?

Did he have issues with the coaches at Virginia?

So many questions and a great story waiting to be told.

But all we get are 75-word blog entries from the DMN and FWST. I remember the good old days when someone would have written a nice, in-depth feature story about a guy like this.

That would be the median height of NFL wide receivers, not the average. Fwiw.

Thanks for the link. I listened to the radio interview between Irvin and Ogletree.

That was a very good, candid interview. Ogletree admits he wasn't the greatest practice player and may have taken it for granted that because he was the man among receivers he may not have pushed himself at UVA. But now he's rededicated himself. I can accept and believe that. A lot of players hate practicing, particularly if you've been playing football a long time.

I also know it's a reality that coaches sometimes care more about their system than tailoring their system to the players.

I see that even at the community level where some of the coaches of teams in our community football league have tremendous talent but the coaches keep trying to force their system. It's sad, but it happens.

Be that as it may, I'm excited about Ogletree. Kid is well-spoken too.

You are correct. I don't have all the heights of the NFL wide receivers to determine the average.

Thanks for the catch - pun intended. :)

He's bigger and faster, but Ogletree gave me kind of a Kelvin Martin kind of vibe out there.

Actually, that's neither the median nor the average of NFL wide receivers. It's just the middle point of the range. You have to get all NFL wide receivers together to determine the median.

Yea, I mean that's why I said it's bordering on small. Not quite small, but a tiny bit either way would mean he's small. He and Crayton will be tied for smallest WRs on the Cowboys roster after cuts.

I was assuming that he was including all NFL receivers, and that those were the outliers.... or whatever. It's been 13 years since I took statistics. :)

No, that's what he did.

But the median just means "middle number". Like lets say there's only 5 receivers in the league and their heights are:

5'9", 5'10", 5'10", 6'5",6'6"

So even though the range is from 5'9" to 6'6", the median is still 5'10"-- the middle number of ALL the NFL players.

The average would obviously be 6' (2/3)"

OK, if Ogletree turns out like R Wayne I'll be happy. :D

Same height and nearly same weight.
