I attempted to make this same point with some of the mendenhall crowd yesterday but it fell on deaf ears. Not only is Felix a better fit four our team, he has demonstrated prolonged production versus mendenhall's one and done season if you will. Not to mention Felix also is a two time all american, but hey, mendenhall sure does have a catchy name i guess.

Prolonged production as a backup....nice.

The $30M I could live with although I think $25M is more appropriate. I don't like the talk of $40M-60M that has been thrown out there.

I hadn't heard it was up to that much!

Felix will be a more productive rookie, book it!

LOL, how many years did Mendenhall start again? Who was ahead of him on the depth chart?? I also don't suppose the words ALL AMERICAN mean anything to you either?

Seriously, why so in love with Mendenhall? Who ever heard of the guy till this year? Is it just his cool name?

Jerry finally makes a pick

April 27, 2008 1:12 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

The Cowboys have taken another running back in the fourth round. Georgia Tech is only the sixth back in ACC history to lead the conference in rushing in consecutive seasons. He started out at Oklahoma, but he was stuck behind Adrian Peterson and transferred.

The NCAA waived the rule requiring him to sit out a year and he became a star at Georgia Tech. There are some concerns because he's had some injury problems. He's willing to play through pain. He's one of the guys who plays with a chip on his shoulder (Marion Barber anyone?) and the Cowboys thought he was the best player on the board. Now the Cowboys have Barber, Choice and rookie Felix Jones. It looks a little crowded backfield, but the Giants showed last season how important it is to have depth at the position. Seventh-round pick Ahmad Bradshaw ended up splitting carries with Brandon Jacobs toward the end of the season.

NFL draft, Marion Barber, Tashard Choice, Felix Jones

Jerry completely lied or didnt follow his own advice when he told ed werder that we werent looking for backups to our 13 probowlers...

Really Jerry???

Felix - back up rb

Jenkins - back up cb

Bennett - back up te

Choice - back back up rb

Solid Jerry.

You're not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you? We weren't drafting for starters this year. There was no one available at our picks that would have started anywhere. What about this do you not get?

I have nothing against Choice, but had JJ picked Mendenhall in the first this would not have been neccessary. Jones is probably never going to be a full time back, now he has to find another back to compensate in case Barber bolts or gets injured.
This is exactly why draft mistakes come back to haunt you.

I'm not so sure about that. Dallas doesn't even have a #3 tailback and most teams tend to use them a bit in each game, so it probably wouldn't be advisable to just draft Mendenhall and call it a weekend. I like Mendenhall over Felix, but they still needed to look at tailback.

I had hoped Mendenhall was going to be our choice and when Felix Jones was picked, I was pretty upset. I've gotten over that now after reviewing the players and how they best fit this team. In my opinion, Felix seems to be a smart choice for the area we're trying to improve - backup to Marion and return specialist.

Jones can contribute immediately as a 3rd down back, slot, and special teams. I also realized why we gave a pick and selected him first with our 22nd, then moving from 28th to 25th pick to lock in Jenkins. The Steelers and Panthers, picked up a running back, and Texans may have snatched Jones.

Areas where Jones excels include backup to Dmac, kickoff returns and his ability to run the screen effectively. We haven't had a running back run a screen very well since Tony Dorsett.

Not only that, but this came from Ed Werder who is about as reliable as a '73 Pinto.

And you could argue with the Jenkins pick. He's definitely a guy that could push either Henry or Pacman as Henry (who I generally like) does get hurt and it does effect his play and isn't exactly a stud CB and Pacman may not even get reinstated and if he does, will have to wear off some rust.

Honestly, this makes me like the Felix Jones pick much more now. We'll never have to rely on Felix as an every down.

Think New Orleans.

Barber = McAllister
Felix = Reggie

They were in trouble when McAllister went down. Reggie's a nice weapon unless you rely on him as an every down back. Now we have the true backup RB we needed.

I agree, totally. Choice was a great pick because it gives them the guy who can carry the load, if need be, should Barber go down.

I am really happy with this pick and it makes the Jones pick much better now cause he can give them what they need him to, a KR/RB that can give us some running and recieving.

Another great pick

When you are 13-3 its because your roster is loaded. Other than SS I'M NOT SURE WE COULD HAVE DRAFTED A STARTER THIS YEAR.

Couldnt agree with you more. I initially wanted Mendenhall when he fell to the Boys at 22 but I wouldnt change it now. Fantastic.

I don't get it ...

why would you spend a 4th rounder on a player that will get maybe 20-30 touches a year? That' something you spend a 6th/7th round pick on.

For a 4th round, I am hoping that he's a at least 2nd stringer who has the potential of developing into a first stringer.
