As you know, I'm a+ certified, but have no hands on experience job related. but I have a problem that I cannot figure out.

I use Comcast as my provider and have a Netgear router provided by Comcast. The router is upstairs and I'm downstairs in a finished basement. I have had no problems until recently connecting to the Internet, but now I cannot get connected...it tells me that the signal is low or none at all.

Right now I'm on a laptop in the basement, connecting no problem.

The computer that I'm having a problem is a desktop Compaq, Presairo 6000. I have been using it for years and no problems until recently and lost all connections to the router. Well not all, but the singnal strength all of a sudden went low or non at all.

I thought that maybe the network card might be bad (a 54g Belkin) so I switched it out for a Netgear card Wireless-G and got it all hooked up as far as the WEP key and connecting to the router. However, the signal is still the same, low or nothing at all.

I know that some things can cause interference between the signals, but it does not affect me right now on this laptop.

I've tried what little I know, but not what? Do you gurus think the computer just went South on me? Everything else works fine but the Internet connection?

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated...

Any ideas why I have all of a sudden lost my connection?

Have you installed any new updates lately? Try updating the wireless card drivers and the router firmware.

I assume you have the wireless connection secured.

If it is distance related, you can try to go into the router and boost the power output throught the antennae. Be careful though, as increasing the power output may, scratch that, will definitely raise the temperature in the router itself possibly causing random reboots or hardware failure.

The other thing to try is to use a directional antenna. These do exactly what the name imply.

Good Luck.

Do you have a usb drive to save the drivers to?

Or burn them to a cd from the other computer.

Or move the other computer to where your internet cable coming into your router is...hook up the computer there, do all the stuff you need to do on the internet.

Move the computer back to your basement and see if the updates worked.

Something has changed from when it did work and when it did not. I would imagine it might have been a windows update or driver update from windows. Sometimes SP updates (the most recent SP3 for XP) can mess up drivers. Also sometimes people download hardware drivers from the windows update page...this can screw them up and they are better off getting their driver updates from the hardware manufacturers page.

You could try a usb wireless adapter.

When you insert or remove the card from the slot do you hear a beep?

No...but I do have an error that I know nothing about. It says...

Mircosoft . NET Framework error

Unhandled exception in part of the application.

I wonder if this is a motherboard error?

.NET is a program

Try uninstalling it

If you don't hear that beep then the slots may not be working properly. I'd try a usb wireless adapter.
