So I'm at work and kinda bored, so I started digging around some old Bill Simmons articles and came across this little passage in one of his mailbags:

The Marion Jones Award for "Worst and most belated apology"
To the NFL for quietly admitting this week that the refs screwed up with that heinous intentional grounding call on Romo at the end of the Giants game. Hey, sorry for turning second-and-10 into second-and-20 on your biggest game of the season. Would a low-key apology that nobody outside of the die-hard Cowboys message board posters will notice make it up to you?

My day is ruined now that I can think about that game for at least the next 3 hours, so I figured I'd ruin some other people's day as well.

Remember that call made against Bigg vs. M Strehan (sp?) where Bigg got called for unnecessary roughness? Bigg was trying to keep Romo clean.

I not one for excuses, but there were some bad calls made that game.

Only justifies what most thought all along, the refs screwed up again.

Is intentional grounding reviewable?

If it's not, it should be.

even with the ref screw ups we had our shot to win the game and blew it.

Now where's the apology for the heinous personal foul call on Leonard Davis?

Or the apology from the team for playing so poorly that a couple of bad calls determined the game.

Agreed...I think it should be gotten rid of altogether because I'm pretty sure that spiking the ball to stop the clock is EXACTLY what intentional grounding is.

I hate the rule as is. The more I think about it, the more angry and irrational I get :banghead:

No, spiking the ball the stop the clock does not entail avoiding a tackle. So it isn't grounding.

Are you that loudmouth at the sports bar who always drunkenly shouts "grounding!!!!!" whenever someone spikes it to stop the clock?

or from Kevin Burnett, for that needless taunting penalty before the half that set up that scoring drive

the Giant, divisional playoff game?

Kevin Burnett game was the 2nd regular season game that year.

Can't ruin my day with this cause I let this go a long time ago. The calls didn't keep the Cowboys from winning. Missed plays, by several people, kept the Cowboys from winning.

Or the apology from fans for not understanding that at such high levels, in intense games between talented teams, it will often time come down to a play or two either way, and those plays CAN ABSOLUTELY be bad calls from officials that push the game the other way.
