One big issue is preventing Cowboys from getting to Super Bowl; here's how they can fix it

Kenny Britt is another option! As you know, Kenny had over 1000 yds receiving on 68 receptions with 5 TDs. His annual salary was around 4.5 million. That's not bad number two numbers! What do you think? Is he looking for a 4 year deal at 6 mill a year? Either way options are plenty, and Britt is a great option too
That sounds about right to me - I was actually thinking 3 years in the 15-18 mm range would be steal. 4 years would probably actually work to our favor better since that would extend a theoretical deal with Britt one year beyond Dez's current expiration. In the event we move on and have to bring in a new #1 (and we'll have to at that point), a player like Britt (or the ones you mentioned minus Boldon who should be retired by the ) would be a nice bridge-type player for that transitional year.

It isn't bare, but when the only way you can get to Rodgers is by blitzing in a scheme built around the defensive line getting upfield and getting pressure, you've got some real needs on your line.

Adding someone like Chandler Jones would help, but if he doesn't re-sign with Arizona, he's probably going to be seeking a Oliver Vernon-type deal. Then, you've got Melvin Ingram, whose a little light for 4-3 end, and Jason Pierre-Paul, who's a couple years removed from a 10-plus-sack season. Or you roll the dice on a player like Mario Addison, whose coming off a career year. but at least was a decent spot rusher his previous two years.

Where we are drafting, the top ends will be out of reach, but maybe a Demarcus Walker will be there for us if the draft rankings I'm looking at are accurate or a Takkarist McKinley, who would probably fit more in the Simeon Rice mold.

What we need is a tone-setter. An end who can consistently get pressure or draw double-teams to allow the inconsistent rushers like Mayowa, Irving, Crawford and Lawrence a better chance to break through.

Takk would upgrade RDE and he has the explosiveness to make a difference on the edge and may be around at #28.

I would look at a free agent DE as well, mid tier player that can give you some pass rush.

Kiper, in his latest mock: 31. Atlanta - Derek Barnett DE Tennessee!

An early mock for Kiper but no way we let Barnett pass by and instead draft a CB.

This DL needs fresh talent, so attacking it both in free agency and the draft would be smart business!

  • Anquan Boldin had 67 receptions for 584 yds and 8 TDs for 2.75 million.
  • Brandon LaFell 862 yds 2.5 million
There are guys out there who can help at WR, if we choose to go heavy on defense in the draft. But we could also get DE help for the team for around 13-14 mill a year. There are options to improve this team.

This team is close, if we add 2-3 decent pieces we can get to the Super Bowl. Let's strike now, instead of waiting 2-3 years for rookies to develop. Look at tank, Gregory, Irving. They've been with the team 2-3 years and nada! Hitchens has been with the team 2-3 years and meh.....
Been wanting Boldin on this team for years.

Go with a vet at WR because the learning curve is too steep for rookie WRs. We need someone that can come in and contribute ASAP.

Local radio here in DC was talking about him, apparently there is mutual interest between Britt and the skins.

They started a couple years ago with the Jones and Gregory picks (which we all know about the Gregory pick)...

And then last year added Brown, Smith (who could very well contribute greatly in '17) and a DT who contributed 5 sacks as a rookie.

On top of that the Cowboys signed Mayowa, who over the last part of the season really came on.

And we know what Irving is turning into.

So it's not like the cupboard is bare. A couple more DE's are needed along with more secondary help.

A top-10 defense could be achieved in 2017.
alot of things need to fall the Cowboys way on those players you mentioned.
Jones - shows flashes but I believe he's not there yet
Gregory - Lost cause
Brown - potential
Smith - Big and I mean big question mark yet
Mayowa - rotation player
Irving - I don't think anyone including the Cowboys know what they have in him yet.

Many times "luck" is all you've got.

Virtually every Dlinemen on the Cowboys is a "rotation" player simply because that's how the Cowboys choose to run their defense.

We had everything we needed this year. It was a missed opportunity. Came out slow and needed to go for the kill on our last possession. This one is worse than 07 IMO.

They didn't win the first game vs. GB with a bunch of blitzing. Much of it was done with a 3-man rush... But the Cowboys were much better holding gap integrity in game #1 vs. game #2.

That being said I'd consider Addison or Sheard.
Different Green Bay team. Marinelli needed to adjust much earlier.

Did anyone else roll over laughing when reading 234 yds/game was the worst pass defense in the league?

the more i think about it the more i am convinced we need to go after a top tier DE in the FA,no rookie DE is going to dramatically improve this Defense.we can still draft Dline in the early RDs but the RDE should be a guy who can give us 10+ sacks .
Both

Irving with a threat on the other side could be a very good player. He's pretty good when single blocked so we need a guy on the other side who threatens an offense if you double Irving

Anyone know what it would take to get JPP here? He would be an absolute instant upgrade.
He signed a one-year deal for about 10 mil. I wish we had made the effort last year when it was still unclear how he would play with only 2 fingers and a thumb. But had they watched the film of his last four or five weeks of 2015, they would have seen that he still had the ability to pressure the passer. Now he is out of our price range I fear.

I absolutely agree with this article. This defense, while admirable, needs an injection of talent. We all called it, that the defense would be our ultimate let down, and it was. So, fix it Cowboys FO.
