One big issue is preventing Cowboys from getting to Super Bowl; here's how they can fix it

Even if every pick this draft is defense, some hit some don't. A couple of rookies on DL that aren't even at their adult weight are going to lead this team to a superbowl? Sure it has to be done, but don't expect huge impact next season from an all defense draft.

They aren't going to draft 3 DE's in the first three rounds unless they're the best available prospects at the positions the Cowboys are looking at...

And the odds are they won't be. May have one DE in the first 3 rounds but certainly not 3 of them.

If I had to guess I wouldn't be surprised if they came away with a DE, CB and WR, and not necessarily in that order.

Following the Cowboys draft board has served them well recently– Why deviate?

In addition they'll probably be able to pick up a middling DE through free agency like Sheard or Addison.

This is likely although I'd say they'll take the BPA period. There is no question they will concentrate on pass rush, cover LB, and DB. But they'd take a 3 tech who was disruptive if he's there. Or a tackle, TE or WR. They would just rather have a pass rusher, ball hawking safety, cover corner, or cover LB who can play the run as well, too.

Here's what people tend to forget when they're in the bushes. You have a bust rate of significance in every round. Some positions are safer than others. What you want is to draft players who will contribute and not bust. You'd rather have a player who not only contributes but does so at a very high level. But you want your draft pick to stick and contribute. Even if you take a cover corner high in R1 and they don't live up to expectations, better to have them help in some way rather than wash out. Obviously you want your R1 to perform at a R1 level but first you want them to contribute.

You can't take a DE in R1-3 unless those guys all have a shot to succeed and are close to the same tier as other needs.

We've drafted well on offense but horrible on defense. You could say we did better this year on defense for once but that remains to be seen. So to say our strategy has worked well overall is not completely true.

I agree with that.

But there is no 100% sure, fool-proof way of selecting draft picks. Every team (system?) usually gets more wrong than right.

It's not like the store for suitable defensive ends is closed. No, they'll get a good choice to bring up or add in...

As to the insatiable doubt that infests too many conversations here, about looking into the future. Get a set and quit complaining. Be glad for what has already occurred, but add into a sense of commitment BY FANS!!

This.....

It's not that the Cowboys aren't good at finding defensive help.
Stephen Jones is on record saying that their targets in the 2012 draft were Michael Brockers and Booby Wagner.
Instead of staying put and taking those two, we unloaded our picks to move up for Mo.

Same scenario in 2014.
Stephen said our pick in the second was kony early who you may remember from last yrs super bowl performance. 3 sacks and an interception.
Instead of just saying put we unload a 2 and 3 for tank.

Undo those deals and we roll into the playoffs with a lb core of lee and Wagner with early and brockers anchoring the line.
Just maddening!!!
Stay put, trust your board and make the flipping picks

That's right.

And it's extremely doubtful that 3 DE's will represent the 3 BPA at those points of the draft.

In addition the Cowboys will most likely sign a FA DE to help with the situation.

Agree. May be reminiscent of getting Haley and Casillas types like we did via FA. I just don't know if our cap situation will allow it.

here's an outside the box thought. I know he's technically a 3-4 OLB, and he's not a free agent. Whitney Mercilus. Let's say Houston does want to trade for Romo. I'm not sure what the market would be for Romo, and I'm skeptical if this trade would work straight up. Maybe the Cowboys could sweeten the pot and throw in a 5th round draft pick or something, and maybe have an incentive in the trade that if Romo plays a certain amount of games then the Cowboys would receive Houstons 5th... Idk. I'm just thinking out loud. Not even sure if Mercilus could transition to a 4-3 DE. Thoughts?
Welcome to the zone brother! Happy posting

That sounds about right to me - I was actually thinking 3 years in the 15-18 mm range would be steal. 4 years would probably actually work to our favor better since that would extend a theoretical deal with Britt one year beyond Dez's current expiration. In the event we move on and have to bring in a new #1 (and we'll have to at that point), a player like Britt (or the ones you mentioned minus Boldon who should be retired by the ) would be a nice bridge-type player for that transitional year.
Good points bro!
