I have been of the mindset that franchising Shultz was a mistake. As the season has progressed, I am even more of that mindset.

I know he was Dak’s security blanket, but only because Dak can’t read the field that well. I think this was a case of wasted cap space and a younger player could have adequately filled Schultz’ role.
Your hindsight is always spot on.

They didn't make a mistake. Signing him to a long-term contract would have been the mistake.

They're 20 weeks from being done with his overrated butt.
Oh, so according to you, they didn't overpay him this season. :muttley: Good to know.

It was not a mistake, especially at that time. They could not work out a contract. And for sure you don’t want to let him walk. Not with the current TE situation at that time. You had McKeon coming off an injury and Sprinkle otherwise.
Regardless they were drafting a TE at some point.

They drafted well with Ferguson, and got lucky in a way with Hendershot.

I’ve consistently thought he was overrated but there was no way he wasn’t going to be resigned for this season, especially considering the amount of 12 personnel that it was as obvious they would be playing. Luckily his agent was greedy and he’s being exposed to an extent. No way could they go into the season with a 4th round pick and a player that didn’t exist yet as their starters after trading Cooper!

It was the right move. At the time they literally had no one else, and he was coming off a big year so he had proven capable.

The wrong move would have been a big contract.

3rd or 4th round pick: wer'e getting a comp most likely anyways
Dalton Schultz (TE)
LVE (MLB) or Noah Brown (WR)

for:

Roquan Smith (MLB, Bears) or DJ.Moore (WR, Panthers)

Yes or No to either?
Shultz for either? Yes.

Sign either of these guys to a long term mega deal? No. Hard pass.

We'd have either the best LB or WR corps in the league for years.

Furthermore , Schultz money and even LVE or Browns paltry salaries go to the majority of signing Smith or Moore. Both are legit #1's at their positions.

I take either and be happy.

Bears would ask for a boatload for Smith because it is Jed and the boys.

The money you save from Schultz and LVE or Brown will almost be a wash to what you would pay a young impact player.

We would have the best LB or WR corps in the league. Young too.

Shultz is making franchise money right now.

Seems TE play has somewhat been quiet. Rush has been hitting WRs with consistency not relying too much on the dump off. Watch out when Gallup goes full speed and sync with Rush, or Dak.

I thought the franchise tag was a good idea vs signing him to a long term deal. Give him a 3rd season of productivity to show what he's worth. Never thought his productivity would fall off a cliff, but clearly he's more valuable to a QB1 like Dak who trusts him. At this point the franchise tag is working, as the Cowboys made no long term commitment.
He is injured and understand when he is healthy the cowboys have another weapon.

I don’t know how you can criticize anyone after 5 games. There is plenty of time and opportunities left in the season for Schultz to show up. Same for goes for Tolbert. Look at Sam Williams yesterday. Some of the posters said he was a bust two weeks ago. Relax……

The biggest mistake was signing LVE and not Bobby Wagner. The defense would be undeniably better had we made that signing to the point that there’s almost no weakness.

Excellent post. Its not like I hate LVE, but he's just not physical enough for my idea of a MLB. Wagner would have been a grand slam of a signing

It appears Shultz has made a major mistake with this Board.........he got hurt. Shame on you Shultz. Get healthy. Blake Jarwin will let you know what an injury will do to you, here.

I totally disagree.....at that point, when we signed Schultz we had no other TE on the roster....and there weren't much other options out there as anyone even close to being good got tagged.

so you don't go into the off season with a big hole, trade your top WR and let your best 3rd WR walk and have holes everywhere.

it was the right call. he has been injured the past couple of games. he doesn't have chemistry with Rush.

but given our two current TEs we found in draft and UDFA, then we are now in good shape to go into next season and let Schultz walk.

but then again, in July nobody had a crystal ball like you do now

This is exactly why you franchise a player...because you want them to prove how good they are.

You Dak analysis is laughable btw.

At least he didn't get resigned. Let him walk next year. The biggest mistake was cutting Lael Collins. Imagine him next to Smith at LG. The holes that would open up would be insane.
