DallasEast;2070857 said:Statistically, Witten will not have to worry about being compared with his present-day peers playing his position in order to be inducted. The Board of Selectors will probably weigh his numbers against those of arguably the best, modern NFL tight end already enshrined: Ozzie Newsome.
He has work ahead of him to equal Newsome's numbers, which are 662 receptions, 7,980 yards and 47 touchdowns. If he were to average nearly 63 catches, 800 yards and over five touchdowns over the next five seasons, he will have accomplished that feat by the age of 30. He had similiar numbers in '05, which were below his higher stats set in '04 and last season, so it's within his reach.
Even so, it takes more than numbers to reach the Hall. It takes a strong career resume filled with accolades and peer recognition too. Here are bio links to current tight ends already enshrined who have that extra hype in addition to sheer numbers:

Witten is the type of player with the strength of character and superior skills that are perfectly suited for a Hall of Famer, but he has miles to go before reaching that finish line.
Don't ever let Iron Mike hear you say that.Dreadnought;2070869 said:Great statistical break down. Call me dumb, but I never knew Mike Ditka was a tight end!
Dreadnought;2070771 said:I know he has been in the league for TECHNICALLY 4 seasons. But in reality, he missed one due to injury and another he only played 2 games.
AdamJT13;2070975 said:But you did include Winslow's yardage from his partial season. That, or you rounded up for Winslow but not for Witten.
Here's a little stat about Witten -- he has more catches and more yards through age 25 than any other tight end in NFL history, with 14 more catches and 25 more yards than Tony Gonzalez, who is second in both categories. Nobody else is within 91 catches or 310 yards at the same age. And if he gets at least 50 catches and 749 yards this season, he'll be No. 1 through age 26, too.
