Opinions... Is Witten a HOFer?

the guy has not even won a playoff game...are you kidding me? this entire team and us as fans need to stop looking at stats and pro bowls....and the players need to stop worrying about being the highest paid.....we have not won a playoff game since 1995....it is embarrassing and it is not due to a lack of talent. jerry jones has done his part....the ink in his pen is dry from writing checks....win something!

People keep on bringing up this issue of playoff wins. Wins are a function of the team and not the individual. I think the only position where this is really relevant is QB - I am not sure if there is a single QB in the HOF who didn't at least get to the Super Bowl (or league championship prior to the merger).

As of right now, is JAson Witten a Hall of Famer? I vote he is a show in.

As of right now...this is a very embarrassing question...though not as embarrassing as your answer.

He's on the right track but it's a long way from here to there. He is certainly moving in the right direction, though.

He's so young. What happens if Witten kicks it up another notch? :D

In 5 years Witten has.

3,983 yards and 21 touchdowns.

He has a *LONG* way to go before being considered in the hall.

Tony Gonzalez has almost 10,000 yards and 66 touchdowns

Todd Heap has almost 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Antonio Gates has 4,000 yards and 43 touchdowns.

Kellen Winslow has 2000 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2 seasons.

As I reiterated above. You have to do ALOT to become a hall of fame tight end.

We haven't won a playoff game since 1995. That can't be right. We did win at least 1 playoff game in 96, ops forgot we won the SB in Feb 96 in Arizona. And in 97 we won our first playoff game by blowing out the Vikes but lost to the Panthers. But in any case it's been a heck of a long time for this proud franchse. The Cowboys have just gotta win this year.

He's only 25 years old. Let's let him at least REACH his prime before we put him in the Hall of Fame.

Winslow has been in the league four seasons. He missed one season and played only part of his first season.

Jason Witten is a total monster, but as of right now he would not make it, but in a few years he will have the numbers to be a HOFer.

His stats will show yes........and barring injury......I say he will for sure.

I know he has been in the league for TECHNICALLY 4 seasons. But in reality, he missed one due to injury and another he only played 2 games.

Statistically, Witten will not have to worry about being compared with his present-day peers playing his position in order to be inducted. The Board of Selectors will probably weigh his numbers against those of arguably the best, modern NFL tight end already enshrined: Ozzie Newsome.

He has work ahead of him to equal Newsome's numbers, which are 662 receptions, 7,980 yards and 47 touchdowns. If he were to average nearly 63 catches, 800 yards and over five touchdowns over the next five seasons, he will have accomplished that feat by the age of 30. He had similiar numbers in '05, which were below his higher stats set in '04 and last season, so it's within his reach.

Even so, it takes more than numbers to reach the Hall. It takes a strong career resume filled with accolades and peer recognition too. Here are bio links to current tight ends already enshrined who have that extra hype in addition to sheer numbers:

Kellen Winslow - http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.jsp?player_id=233

Dave Casper - http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.jsp?player_id=43
Mike Ditka - http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.jsp?player_id=57
John Mackey - http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.jsp?player_id=138
Charlie Sanders - http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.jsp?player_id=266

Witten is the type of player with the strength of character and superior skills that are perfectly suited for a Hall of Famer, but he has miles to go before reaching that finish line.

Great statistical break down. Call me dumb, but I never knew Mike Ditka was a tight end!

Don't ever let Iron Mike hear you say that. ;)

But you did include Winslow's yardage from his partial season. That, or you rounded up for Winslow but not for Witten.

Here's a little stat about Witten -- he has more catches and more yards through age 25 than any other tight end in NFL history, with 14 more catches and 25 more yards than Tony Gonzalez, who is second in both categories. Nobody else is within 91 catches or 310 yards at the same age. And if he gets at least 50 catches and 749 yards this season, he'll be No. 1 through age 26, too.

Playoffs and SB wins are usually reserved for judgement of QBs. Not many others are involved there.
Witten has made 4 Pro Bowls in 5 years. If he makes 8-9 straight pro bowls and keeps his production steady, he has a very good shot at the HOF.
If he can make 10 Pro Bowls then he will be in the HOF. No player has had 10 and NOT made it in. Now he also needs to make a few ALL PRO teams as well. And I think he will. If he can make 3-4 ALL PRO teams and 10 Pro Bowls then he will get in.

Witten is truly a freak in some ways. He was so developed at such a young age. One thing I always remember about him is he put up 29 reps in the bench press at the combine. How many elite pass catching TEs have that type of strength at the age of 20.
