Optimism headed up or down at this point?

How does "stink this year" equate to never being a Superbowl threat?

Im saying that if we don't make the playoffs again this season because of the same ole inconsistencies then we'll never get over the hump with Garrett and Romo.

This is our year to make some noise. We aren't getting drastically better anytime soon. In fact I expect to see some really good players have to walk next season.

I was very optimistic until Leary got hurt and then I realized just how precarious the whole OL situation is,,, now I'm "cautiously" optimistic depending on whether some outside vet comes in and Leary recovers soon.

You know, that Cowboys schedule isn't all that easy,,, not like last year.

Really? We play the AFC West in inter-conference play. It doesn't get any easier than that. KC, Raiders and San Diego are easy wins. I'm pleased as punch with our schedule overall, looks pretty easy to me.

Well that's better than "never". But I disagree that Romo and Garrett are solely to blame. A winning team is a direct result of a winning organization. It starts with Jerry and goes down to the equipment guy. Not just 1 or 2 guys.

What I mean by that is I don't see us getting drastically better with Romo and Garrett. Especially with Romo.

This year needs to be the year the Cowboys start making some post season noise.

PROs
Should be getting Ratliff and Spencer back soon

CONs
Leary surgery
Moore retirement
Inability to sign Brian Waters
Claiborne MRI
Beasley injury

I would say most of my pessimism is in regards of our teams inability to stay healthy and field a legitimate offensive line.

And I see us getting better with Garrett and Romo so I guess we can just agree to disagree on this point. I feel that this year we will make some post season noise and will even make it to the Superbowl. And if a miracle occurs and I can go to the game, I'll be sure and take a picture of Romo holding up the Lombardi and Superbowl MVP trophy and post it here.

Has your view on the team become more or less optimistic after watching the preseason games, and why?

...haven't seen enough of the starters.

Frankly, from what I saw..in this last game..Romo had to stay in more than they wanted to play him because the Dolphins held the ball alot against our defense.

Unfortunately.

And what I saw was a replay of last year..a big play..called back by a penalty, etc. Moving backwards like last year.

So I don't know. I honestly don't know. Injuries are already distacting our season. Again.

Know what I mean..?

Depends. While I love the youth, and it appears we are getting talented again, Wilcox, Holloman, etc. very exciting watching these guys. But the defense, at least in this preseason has given up a lot up long pass plays. We play like this against Eli or Rogers and they will pick us apart. Maybe it's just preseason but IMO I've noticed we've been getting torched down the seams and on crossing patterns in the middle of the field. Is Wade back? :(

You do know that in the pre-season that there are no game plans, right? Plus, the roster has not been set.

So you picked the 3 games that don't look bad and skipped past the other 13 that includes the NFC North teams(all of them will be tough games) plus Denver and New Orleans and our own division,, lol, talk about whistling past the graveyard.

Yes I know, but why have we not being doing the same if that's the case? We always do this year after year. We play our starters for no time, and coddle the injured. Don't act like its not true.

I'm excited, I really am, we are getting younger and have a lot of talent. We have a new defense and from my count, hmm let's see, we have Rat, Spenc, Mo, Carr (barely) that have not played a lick this preseason or TC.

Much more optimistic at the start of this year than the end of last year, but it doesn't make any difference if we improved at certain positions--RB,LB,TE, etc. It comes down to one thing and one thing only--RED ZONE results. We must drastically improve our red zone scoring, if not, then same old story as the last two years.

I remember Jason Campbell completing something like 20 of 21 passes at one point in a game against our old "bend, don't break" defense, so naturally I hope we're doing something different this time. It doesn't seem likely we can get the wrinkles out of our new defense against scrubs during preseason, so it may be touch and go for a few games, forcing the offense to step up and score a lot of points to win. That said, by crunch time in December, we should have the kinks worked out and make a playoff run.

Meh . . . Why?

ROMO- Imo, he is Jake Plummer and Jake Delhomme rolled into one. The last two preseason games will be very telling as to how his season will go. If Romo doesn't play well, I see a benching in his future, because JG's job is on the line. And blaming all of Romo's miscues on the OL is like a little kid blaming a turtle for his misbehaving. Having said that, is it possible that the lack of a solid OL the last few years have taken a toll on his psyche? Yes. And we can blame that on the Jones's.

OL though improved, is still porous, either through injury, or lack of good solid anchors. Frederick was a great pick, but he is a rookie.

DL We changed DC; that may be a good, or that may be bad. The uncertainty weakens the team until proven otherwise. One thing is for sure. Super Bowl teams are totally in sync both defensively and offensively. The Cowboys and the concept of "sync" are as foreign to each other, as the notion that the Cowboys will win a 6th super bowl in the near future. In years past, the offensive players and defensive players might as well have been speaking a different language for all they have helped each other out. For whatever reason . . . although I have my suspicions.

Reason for any optimism:

JG I like this man. He gave up play calling for the good of the team. Whether that was forced on him by JJ, as well as the other staff changes that were made, is a moot point. Humility is the kind of leadership quality I have a great deal of respect for. As does the team from what I'm hearing. So, for instance, if Romo falters right out of the gate, I have confidence that JG will slap him upside the head, figuratively speaking. I think. JG has been a mucho tough hombre this camp. If I were Romo, I'd think twice about sand lotting it this year.

It's up. I like how Garrett is being allowed to grow into being a HC and being able to bring in his kind of players. Last season we ended it falling short of the playoffs, but there was no doubt our boys give it everything they had. We could've given up at any point with all of the injuries that piled up and our boys managed to pull out some wins vs at off caliber teams and even fought NO and Wash to the very end. I'm confident because I know with healthy players we will be a lot stronger as far as talent on the field vs the way we ended last season. I'm ready for opening night and so are our Cowboys!!!
