The last thing we should do is cut him. That's what he wants. Jerry should fine him back into the Stone Age

Is winning an individual battle with a player over money more important than the message this sends to the rest of the team, though?

Besides, you guys are assuming that if Jerry waits him out, Orton will retire and Jerry will get that bonus money back. But Orton will probably just do the minimum and go into the season to get his money.

Maybe the mistake was already made and Jerry should just eat the money and move on.

Begin the process of fining him and make sure that the league is fully aware of everything that's going on so that when you go after the money from THIS guy (unlike Ratliff), you GET IT BACK!

I'm telling you, you will all hate it when Jerry coughs up some play time related bonuses to get Orton in here. Haters gonna hate.:D

Orton completely lacks integrity.

Either play for your freaking money, or retire and give it back. Don't force the team to cut you so you don't have to pay back what you stole.

he had a ring side view of the Ratliff crap, he knows if I wait they will cut me

Make him an example at camp if he shows up. Run, run run

I'm thinking this is exactly the process they are going to follow. I've read in a couple articles that they don't want to repeat the Ratliff situation. And in this case, this situation is pretty clear cut. Fine him to the Netherlands until he shows up. And if he shows up with a bad attitude, document everything and establish grounds for conduct detrimental suspension.

Both sides entered the agreement with good intentions, now he doesn't want to honor it. It's a simple matter of coming to some sort of settlement so that both parties can move on. He can retire, but he's gotta give back some cash.

The league really needs to address this issue or the teams need to agree to blackball any player that pulls this crap. Ratliff should never had been able to find a team willing to sign him.

If he cuts Orton, it sends the message that all any disgruntled player wanting more money or a new contract has to do is hold out, and they'll get their wish. Then they'll be free to go wherever they want, and get another contract. It's a bit of a catch-22, but if you let one player get away with this, you'll get a lot of players trying to do the same thing.

This.

You simply can't cut Orton. What value does a contract have if a player can manipulate a franchise like that? JJ has to hold the line on this. If it's me-- Orton never plays another snap for me as a QB, I fine him until he shows up, and when he does finally show up-- his life is miserable. The only way out of the doghouse would be if he admitted he's being a jackass, asks forgiveness, and does a complete 180 and busts his tail from there on out.

Dallas holds ALL the cards in this situation. Orton is banking that they'll just hopefully get frustrated and cut him. It's a calculated risk-- and I understand why he's doing it b/c it just worked when Ratliff played the same hand. However-- I doubt JJ makes the same mistake. How long do you think Orton can go without making a salary and getting fined 10K a day?

He's a millionaire- sure-- but he's not an idiot.

If you cut the player, then the player keeps the money...isn't that what the player wants and so therefore he wins?

And he can be relegated to the emergency QB slot on gameday...

I believe the mistake is your assumptions that Jerry has already messed up. In any case, mandatory is not voluntary as you've incorrectly stated before.

Both sides are in a salary cap stare down. Orton is trying to get himself cut so that he doesn't have to pay back the un-amortized portion of his signing bonus. The Cowboys are holding off from cutting him so that more players don't see that as an option in the future.

Good info. But here's my question: What is the next step? Is there a point where Orton will be forced to pay that sigining bonus back or could this stand-off go on until the Cowboys need to make space on the roster when they make their final cuts following preseason or be forced to continue to hold a spot for a no-show on the roster?
