We all think safety is one of the Cowboys' biggest needs this off-season. They can fill their need in the draft or in free agency and they might be forced to look in free agency if some team comes after Gerald Sensabaugh.
Over the weekend his agent said three or four teams have expressed interest but visits haven't been scheduled yet. The Cowboys put the second-round tender on Sensabaugh, who started 15 games last year.
Antrel Rolle was the best unrestricted free agent available and the New York Giants signed him to a five-year, $37 million deal with $15 million guaranteed on the first day of free agency.
So far the Cowboys haven't gotten into the free-agent market, but we're here to help. We'll offer up a name and do some side-by-side comparison based solely on the numbers from the NFL's Web site.
Oshiomogho Atogwe.
The St. Louis Rams safety is a restricted free agent but he was given the lowest tender possible, which means there is no draft compensation. There has to be some concern because Atogwe's 2009 season ended after right shoulder surgery. And there's also the Ken Hamlin thing that would have to be figured out, unless the Cowboys wouldn't match a deal for Sensabaugh.
But let's look at the numbers for Atogwe, Rolle and Hamlin since 2006. It's not exactly apples to apples because Rolle was a cornerback for Arizona in 2006-07 before moving to safety, but ...
Hamlin - 4.7 tackles per game, 3 sacks, 9 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles
Rolle - 4.9 tackles per game, 1.5 sacks, 11 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles
Atogwe - 5.1 tackles per game, 2 sacks, 18 interceptions, 14 forced fumbles
Atogwe turns 29 in June. Hamlin is 29; Rolle 27. I'm not going to pretend to know all there is about Atogwe's game and his health but the numbers are in his favor.
Is there an opportunity here the Cowboys should pursue?
