Seahawks release OT Hunter after scuffle

NFL.com wire reports KIRKLAND, Wash. (May 16, 2006) -- The Seattle Seahawks released offensive tackle Wayne Hunter after the reserve was charged with misdemeanor assault following a dispute at a sports bar.

According to a police report, Hunter and his brother were involved in a scuffle at the Classics Sports Bar and Grill in Renton. The pair got into an argument, and on the way out of the bar knocked over a table, breaking glasses and plates.

Hunter put his brother into a car, went back into the bar and confronted a man, slamming him on a shuffleboard table, the man told police. Hunter's vehicle was later stopped and he was charged with fourth-degree assault and third-degree malicious mischief, both misdemeanors. No court date has been set.

Hunter was the team's third-round draft choice out of Hawaii in 2003, but has faced legal problems in the past. He was arrested for minor assault against his girlfriend in the summer of 2003, and was twice suspended by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Hunter played in two games over three seasons.

Seattle also signed rookie free agent cornerback Gerard Ross and released offensive guard Kyle Ralph.

If you are a warm body with OT by your name.....and experience in the NFL, then I believe we should let them attend mini-camp and if they are talented then we need to get them signed and ready for training camp.

This guy played in the Super Bowl last year.....or at least saw the game live!

Hunter played in two games over three seasons.

He has played a whopping 30 snaps on offense. Total. In three seasons. And six more plays on special teams.

Dallas is going to be pleasantly surprised with Colombo and Petitti IMO.

Well, obviously Seattle was trying to keep his immense talent hidden from the rest of the league.

He's pretty talented, but NEVER should have left school early. Needed more time to get better. Being an athlete got him drafted in the 3rd round.

Adam,

From that snippet of the article, how did you glean those particulars, the numbr of snaps he played?

Sure, lets sign him up. Its not like the star means anything anymore. Any ole criminal element that wants to play football should be given a chance. I am sure its not his fault hes a bad guy and with a pocket full of money he would fly straight and become a decent member of society. Right?

but to be fair -- it isn't like he was on a team with a crap line and couldn't break through -- he was on a team with a great line and there simply wasn't any PT for him.

this isn't his first arrest though. so I'd keep away.

Wayne was drafted to play OT by the 'Hawks but he was a Defensive lineman his whole college career. That may have had something to do with his lack of playing time...takes a while to learn a new position esp. at the NFL level.

SEAHAWKS STAND ON PRINCIPLE

Several league insiders with whom we have spoken are applauding the Seattle Seahawks for moving swiftly to cut the cord on offensive lineman Wayne Hunter, only days after he was arrested for assault and malicious mischief. The team could have avoided a potential grievance from Hunter and the NFLPA by carrying him on the roster into training camp and then adding his name to the list of final cuts. This strategy would have made it difficult if not impossible to tie Hunter's termination to his recent arrest.

As we explained on Tuesday night, teams have limited authority under the CBA to impose disciplines on players. Only the Commissioner can mete out punishment to players who plead guilty to or who are convicted of criminal charges.

But teams like the Seahawks, who we hear quietly have instituted a zero tolerance policy for players with behavioral problems, apparently are willing to face the financial consequences of sending a strong message to the locker room.

At a time when teams are required to spend more money than ever on player salary, who cares if the team ends up forking over $721,600 to a guy that they don't want infecting the rest of the roster?

Hunter is regarded in league circles as a Class A-1 turd, and we're amazed in hindsight that the 'Hawks opted to extend to him the restricted free agent tender offer. Still, we're hearing that the team had essentially put him on final notice that any further issues would result in his release; perhaps, then, the team gave him a one-year offer under the express understanding that one false move would result in a pink slip.

The only remaining question is whether Hunter will challenge the decision via the filing of a non-injury grievance. It looks like an open-and-shut case, but to the extent that he wants to play for another NFL team, now might be a good time for him to show the rest of the football world that he's ready to accept responsibility for his conduct.

And if you ask his former girlfriend, the guy he supplexed onto the table and assorted others who asked "how's your job going" he's none too happy about that fact.:laugh2:

It's funny, I remember his name as a guy I thought might be a good player before that draft a few years ago- he has the size and athleticism. Guess I was wrong. If you didn't know the guys were getting tested you'd say his behavior sounds like roid rage.
