Well this season has certainly nosedived quickly. Yes, we lost a lot of key guys, but we dropped two games that we could have and should have won even with our existing personnel. Not winning at least one of the two is downright backbreaking. So what comes next?
Let me start off with a real hot take here: we absolutely must win 2 of our next 5 games. Assuming it will take 9 wins to make the playoffs, if we aren't at least 4-5 by the time we get Romo back (and that assumes he's back by Miami), it will be almost impossible to make the playoffs. Even at full strength, it will take a herculean effort to finish the season 6-1 or 7-0.
So here's what we've got left with Weeden (or, god willing, Cassel) at the helm:
vs NE
BYE
@ NYG
SEA
PHI
@ TB
NE and SEA are almost certainly losses. I know Hardy and Ro Mac coming back will help, but those teams are just much, much better than we are. With the way the Giants have looked the last couple of weeks, that game in the Meadowlands is looking awfully tough, though still winnable. I think we probably lose there. That means we HAVE to beat the Eagles and Tampa Bay. Frankly, those are two bad teams and we should beat them even without Romo.
So to summarize: I think we're in for a long, brutal next four weeks (three games), followed by two absolute must wins against Philly and Tampa. If we can get through this stretch at 2-3, Romo may be able to carry us to the promise land, thereby fulfilling my username prophecy of "RomotheSavior."
Gonna need a lot of bourbon this fall...
