Packers propose banning Tush Push

Full text from Mike Garafolo's Twitter:

Spoke to Nick Sirianni today on the tush-push vote. With a grin, he said: "We’ll see how it goes. All I will say about it is (Jonathan) Gannon, (Shane) Steichen and (Kellen) Moore better vote for it. They are in the (head coach) position right now because of that play. So all three, I better have those three votes right there and the #Eagles’ vote. I at least know we have four.”

I believe it takes 9 votes to squash a rule change (over 25%). So that is in Philly’s favor there
Gannon, Steichen and Moore don’t get to vote on it. Neither does Sirianni, for that matter.

Honestly.....whatever happened to the rule that you couldn't help a runner to begin with? It's like the league completely forgot one of It's rules.....this isn't rugby.

The rule was changed 20 years ago. And the “rugby scrum” style is not being banned by this rule. It can, and will still, happen. Pushing the ball carrier will remain allowed, simply not if the ball carrier is the one who received the snap.

Teams will simply figure out different plays to gain an advantage the rules do allow.

Ban the pushing part or not it won’t matter. Jalen Hurts is going to get that one yard 99% of the time.
My thoughts exactly. 99% of that play is because of the QB and interior OL. Banning this play is going to be a lot more difficult that people realize and to really do so you are going to have to essentially ban the qb sneak.

I just think defenses just need to do what the Packers did at the goalline. Just try to time the jump. At worst, it's a first down, which the tush push gets. At best you kill any momentum for Hurts to get going.

Or someone goes helmet to helmet or shoulder to helmet to Hurts and the Eagles lose Hurts trying to gain a single yard.

Well....the NFL needs to figure it out. That rule change 20 years ago was dumb. Just quit messing with the game. Ever since they let a lawyer be commissioner....it's been a clusterflock.

Completely agree.

I would love to see the NFL end having players help ANY teammate with the ball moving forward. How many times have you seen a player be short of a first down only to be moved forward by a teammate?

Because 2 teams have one play down that the NFL allows per their own rules, they now have to modify that rule because people are cry babies.

Make it illegal to move the ball carrier forward by a teammate, the tush push won't exist.

Just ban it if it gets perfected
Tampa Bay was the only team to stop it. Just copy what they did
Can you elaborate?

How many times?

Got lucky and twice in one game?

Did they ever have to protect against the fake?

What did they do specifically? Or did they just happen to have the right personally and scheme?

Genuinely curious on what defenses are gonna have to do once offenses perfect 2 muscle men pushing the QB from behind.

If you didn’t know the specifics of the play, you’d find it laughable that a rule will be changed cuz one team can run a play that others can’t.

Some of the logic behind the proposed ban is asinine. Player safety - no one got hurt last year running the play. Slows down the game - How, clocks moving on a running play and Philly usually doesn’t permit you to substitute prior to running the play? They get to the line and go unless the opponent calls TO or unless Frankie Luvu is wants more air time.

With guys like Sean *****boy McDermott being added to the competition committee, the push will be on to change it. Prolly should have spent more time analyzing aspects of the play so his team could have successfully used it in KC, but hey, losers lose and I’m all for seeing Buffalo 0-5 in Superbowls.

Don’t think it should be banned but hope it is just so the whiners can STHU and move on to next item on their list of things to complain about.

First, get yourself a Vita Vea. Once you have a stalemate at the line, hope your athletic linebackers can make an athletic play.

In regard to your last paragraph. Teams have been watching Philly run this for a few years now so they’ve had ample opportunity to emulate it. That’s on them for not taking advantage.

Oddly, I’d push more to change the rule of say greater than 50% (just a figure) of the teams ran the play with the success rate equal to Philly’s cuz that would essentially render all 3&1’s and 4&1’s a leaguewide gimme. Now that would be boring. One team doing something special isn’t.

I can't tell if you are confused or just being a clown.

Why do you think it works in Philly more than any other team? They didn't miss a beat without Kelce in the middle this year. The play works more successfully in Philly b/c Jalen Hurts has the strongest pair of legs of any QB in the NFL. Why don't teams just use a top weight lifter? You can't be this dumb....
Hurts barely moves on those plays. Watch the videos. One little forward surge and then he just surfs on the backs of the center and guards. Its the 2 or 3 guys BEHIND HIM who push him over the marker. Although Hurts is a tank, it's great execution, not Hurts powerful legs.

I agree with your post.

I've already stated that it doesn't make sense that teams aren't perfecting it.

I've already stated that I watched some YouTubes of the play, most teams seem to be half-arsing it compared to how Philly does it. Doesn't make sense to me.

I've already stated that it doesn't make sense that OCs aren't scheming fakes off this formation.

I've already stated that Philly had a fake in the playoffs off this formation that got blown up because of a flag. That play, from ALL-22, should be able to tell what is possible fake wise off this formation, and if defenses can handle it.

Already stated that none of it makes since. Why are teams not immulating it, just half-arsing it...after 3 years? Aren't these OCs supposed to be in highly competitive jobs where production matters.

I think I'm making sense. I don't care if this is all fake and you're laughing at me. I've made sense.

Apparently Rozelle didn’t have the votes to ban it. The league is not taking action at this time. The proposal will be considered at a later date.
