The Carolina Panthers have claimed tight end Marcus Freeman, quarterback Matt Moore and tackle Frank Omiyale off waivers from Baltimore, Dallas and Atlanta respectively, the team announced Sunday. All three players were waived when teams reduced their rosters to the 53-player limit for the regular season on Saturday. To make room on the roster for them, the Panthers placed tight end Michael Gaines on injured reserve with a shoulder injury and waived tackle Rashad Butler and guard Will Montgomery.
Freeman (6-2, 246 pounds) attended training camp with the Ravens after being signed as an undrafted rookie free agent from Notre Dame. He played in 44 games with 11 starts during his career for the Fighting Irish and posted 14 receptions for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
Moore (6-3, 202 pounds) completed 21-of-29 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown during the preseason with the Cowboys after being signed as an undrafted rookie free agent from Oregon State. In two seasons with the Beavers, he passed for 5,733 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Omiyale (6-4, 310 pounds) was selected in the fifth round (163rd overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft from Tennessee Tech by the Falcons. He was inactive for all 16 games as a rookie and played in one game and was inactive for 15 contests last season.
Gaines played in all 16 games with nine starts last year and recorded a career-high 15 catches for 146 yards. Butler dressed but did not play in one game and was inactive for 11 contests before being placed on injured reserve with a staph infection as a rookie in 2006. Montgomery appeared in seven games with four starts during his rookie season in 2006.
