Wow, last year Free was the most consistant lineman. Now he gets beat a couple times and it's time to replace him. With Parnell? a LT with zero athletic ability. I see defensive lineman routinely give a good push on Parnell, get him to set his feet to hold ground, and they are around him fast. He can't move laterally.

You think Free was better than Tyron?

Well in re-watching last night with the review up all I can do is laugh.

The 5 yard one hand push was a defender that ran himself out of the play with a slap by Parnell on the way by...o lay.

The 6 second tie up did not mention Parnell got no push at all and forced the run back into traffic.

The pushed the D past the QB was him being beat badly and caused an early throw for an incompletion.

The 4+ second block was 3 seconds and the 5 second was only 2!

Parnell played pretty good against 3rd stringers but come on. This went beyond embellish into pure fantasy.

I don't need you to agree with me.

If you watched the plays for yourself and didn't depend on Bryan Broaddus or some media guy to give you your opinion, then I've accomplished my goal.

He's 28 years old and a 5 year vet. This isn't a 22 year old rookie.

Well, TBF, he didn't play football until the very end of his college career. And he played DE at Ole Miss. And TE, DE and OL in a part of a TC with the Saints as an UDFA. He also didn't play last year. So he's not your usual case of developing an OT esp one meant to be able to play LT.

However, history of career or not, he has to produce to play. I thought his performance was pretty good albeit not stellar last game. He is almost certainly going to be at least the swing tackle at the start of the year. And I think he still has a chance to unseat Free. If Smith gets hurt my guess would be Parnell goes to LT and Free stays at RT rather than replacing Smith.

To add to that, Parnell didn't play High School Football (he played basketball) and his DE time in college was only five games as a situational pass rusher.

This is also similar to the Hitchens or Fred draft pick issue where fans/media proclaimed them a "reach" because the draft media had them ranked lower than where they were picked. Somehow the narrative is that draft media are exactly correct on all rankings which I think you know can't be possible.

Its the power of self-perpetuating Internet Memes. Before Fred and Hitchens it was the posts about how stupid Jones was to say that the team had a third round grade on Leary and a first round grade on DeMarco Murray.

The great thing about people disagreeing with me on Parnell or Free is that it's football talk at CZ and it dilutes the "Jerry Sucks" crowd that just want to troll through threads and beat down Cowboys fans about the team.

As I said in another thread, every post where people disagree with me or even bash my opinions on specific players is a post that's not from an RG3 lover telling us that Jerry and the Cowboys suck.

I would love to see a thousand threads with intricate details of why people think I'm wrong in my analysis of players. They can say I'm biased in all thousand threads. It's still football talk instead of trolling if they post specific details.

Here's a question for you, xwalker: Do you feel Parnell has a better football IQ than Free?

I think Parnell is the prototype RT in size, build and power but I feel he lacks the ability or instinct to apply what he has learned in the classroom and on the practice field. Some might call that experience but how long does he have to be taught before he shows enough consistency to supplant Free as the RT?

Free may not be the most gifted RT on the roster but he does enough to hold down the job. If Parnell can become slightly more consistent in his technique and awareness then I think he could be the starting RT. Personally I don't think it will happen.

My problem with Parnell, is that he just doesn't seem to drop his back side...standing 'too tall' always.

Good observation. He does look uncomfortable in his stance some of the time.

I had high hopes for the player last year but I just don't think he has the instincts to play well enough to unseat Free. I think his time is running out along with Free's.

At some point Parnell would have to play more real games. I think he's basically maxed out as a practice player and needs to play in real games to get better. He's started 1 NFL game and Doug Free has started 71. Parnell started zero college games because he was a basketball player and I assume that Free started in college. Zack Martin is polished as a rookie, but he played 52 college games. IMO, it's just impossible to ever become polished by just practicing and playing preseason games.

He seems to have awareness in terms of knowing that a blitz is coming or that he needs to switch off on a stunt, but his timing is sometimes off. I think you can only get polished on timing by playing in games. I think he's probably at least as developed as Ron Leary was when they made him the starting LG for game 1 of 2013.

I think he has looked progressively more comfortable in these 3 preseason games. Being injured for almost all of the 2013 preseason was a big setback. I've reviewed all of his snaps in 2012 when he played 2 games at LT and rotated with Free for 4 games at RT. He was reasonably good in 2012 considering game 11 of that season was his first ever snaps at OT in a real NFL game.

My saying about Free is the he was "good enough" last year. I spend a lot of time watching players, mostly for the Cowboys or for the draft and mostly OL and DL. It's just not fun watching a "good enough" player. During the Super Bowl years when most people loved Emmitt, Troy and Michael, my favorite player was Erik Williams. He's still my all time favorite football player.

Parnell is fun to watch even if he has some lapses. I enjoy seeing OLinemen bully defenders around. Some of those running plays with Ryan Williams in the Dolphins game, Parnell was a joy to watch. He's just so big and strong and has athleticism to go with it.

I more or less understand why they stay with Free. When Free gets beat, he doesn't normally give the defender a free run at the QB, it's usually more of delayed fail. Parnell hasn't proven that he's won't occasionally whiff; although, I've only really seen 1 true whiff in these 3 preseason games, but it did happen and the QB got hit hard because of it. It's all about pass blocking because Parnell is so much better in run blocking it's not even funny. At this stage I see him as a little bit like the Vikings RT Phil Loadholt who is not a great pass blocker but is a huge bully that inflicts punishment on defensive players.
