Here's a question for you, xwalker: Do you feel Parnell has a better football IQ than Free?
I think Parnell is the prototype RT in size, build and power but I feel he lacks the ability or instinct to apply what he has learned in the classroom and on the practice field. Some might call that experience but how long does he have to be taught before he shows enough consistency to supplant Free as the RT?
Free may not be the most gifted RT on the roster but he does enough to hold down the job. If Parnell can become slightly more consistent in his technique and awareness then I think he could be the starting RT. Personally I don't think it will happen.
At some point Parnell would have to play more real games. I think he's basically maxed out as a practice player and needs to play in real games to get better. He's started 1 NFL game and Doug Free has started 71. Parnell started zero college games because he was a basketball player and I assume that Free started in college. Zack Martin is polished as a rookie, but he played 52 college games. IMO, it's just impossible to ever become polished by just practicing and playing preseason games.
He seems to have awareness in terms of knowing that a blitz is coming or that he needs to switch off on a stunt, but his timing is sometimes off. I think you can only get polished on timing by playing in games. I think he's probably at least as developed as Ron Leary was when they made him the starting LG for game 1 of 2013.
I think he has looked progressively more comfortable in these 3 preseason games. Being injured for almost all of the 2013 preseason was a big setback. I've reviewed all of his snaps in 2012 when he played 2 games at LT and rotated with Free for 4 games at RT.
He was reasonably good in 2012 considering game 11 of that season was his first ever snaps at OT in a real NFL game.
My saying about Free is the he was "good enough" last year. I spend a lot of time watching players, mostly for the Cowboys or for the draft and mostly OL and DL.
It's just not fun watching a "good enough" player. During the Super Bowl years when most people loved Emmitt, Troy and Michael, my favorite player was Erik Williams. He's still my all time favorite football player.
Parnell is fun to watch even if he has some lapses. I enjoy seeing OLinemen bully defenders around. Some of those running plays with Ryan Williams in the Dolphins game, Parnell was a joy to watch. He's just so big and strong and has athleticism to go with it.
I more or less understand why they stay with Free. When Free gets beat, he doesn't normally give the defender a free run at the QB, it's usually more of delayed fail. Parnell hasn't proven that he's won't occasionally whiff; although, I've only really seen 1 true whiff in these 3 preseason games, but it did happen and the QB got hit hard because of it. It's all about pass blocking because Parnell is so much better in run blocking it's not even funny. At this stage I see him as a little bit like the Vikings RT Phil Loadholt who is not a great pass blocker but is a huge bully that inflicts punishment on defensive players.
