Obviously Parnell was a hotter NFL commodity than some realize.

He's a good RT that Dallas developed in house, in the day of Free Agency that doesn't have the benefit it once did.

Jacksonville is one team not the entire NFL. Cowboys were not going to pay that and outside of Jacksonville I heard no one else offering that. I'm happy for him he gets a chance to start but also glad Dallas was not looking to pay him that kind of money

Newsflash amigo, neither do you! And we never will so it's useless to argue about! There's no 'common sense' about it either way.

I'm not the one writing "Because the Jags' offer is so ridiculously higher than anyone else's," as if was a statement of fact.

I'll leave it at that, I like your posts and we both know the points the other is making.

Onto my new pet cat Devin Street!

Various:
Parnell is a solid player and he was paid well beyond his worth but that is how FA works.
Issue is he was never coming back here because he was goign to go to the highest bidder.
DALLAS didn't rate Parnell ahead of Free.
A lot of that has ZERO to do with tape.

Good for both Free and Parnell, each achieved their primary goal.
Free got to remain as the OL captain and RT.
Parnell got to lock in his financial security.

It all happened as it was supposed to.

People keep making up stuff about Free to sell him. All this stuff about being the leader and such a mentor is just smoke. It's over, we bought him. He is just a very average RT and is why he signed for 6m.

Parnell got what he is worth on the open market. Everyone said WAS was going to grab him and he was linked to a few teams needing a RT. Sometimes you take the bird in the hand and you never leave the building. It just means he bought what JAX was selling.

Ask yourself this question:

If the Jaguars' offer wasn't so much better than everyone else's, why is Parnell already ticketed there before the free agency signing period even begins!

If you're the least bit honest with yourself, you'll know why.

I'll leave it at that, I like your posts and we both know the points the other is making.

Fair enough, and thanks for a very enthusiastic and spirited debate!

Parnell is being paid on the potential he may reach his ceiling before he starts falling to the floor. He is no Big Cat Williams that had 8+ years of football experience before switching positions in the NFL. It would be one thing his he was 26 and on the cusp, he will be 29 and maybe on the cusp. I do not fault him for Jax money because he may have 3-4 seasons maybe 5 before he hits journeyman status in the NFl when he would get a little more than vet min. I just felt he lacked the instincts.

It's not potential. He has started and played well enough to earn a deal. The RT was thin to begin with and Free, Dunlap and Newton all re-signed. Parnell was going to get this deal from someone. The Jets, Titans, Jags and Skins were all interested.

Actually XWalker was proven right when Parnell started and played fine at the end of the season and in the playoffs.

And its crazy to say this contract doesn't prove the NFL thinks Parnell is a good player. Derek Newton was an OK starter and got 10MM guaranteed, Parnell got more than that because he is already an OK starter and clearly has upside. If he wasn't the contract would have been less and happened later in the FA period.

The contract only proves what one team thinks of Parnell. Why the Jags think it, we don't know. Maybe they gave him that amount because they think he clearly has upside or maybe they gave him that amount because they like what he already is.

As I said, I've been an advocate for Parnell, but I don't think we should make this more or less of what it is just because we want to feel vindicated. I think most people here felt he would get a starting shot somewhere. The Jags gave him one, and he may or may not justify the amount of money they invested in him.

I wish him luck and am glad he did not go to an East team, because he is already a pretty good player and if he continues developing, I don't want Dallas to have to deal with him.

So now we're rating a player's abilities strictly by the size of the contract?

Wow!

Wow!

If that is all you got from this thread you aren't paying attention. The FA market is just one of the factors in determining a player's ability. Things like game tape, practice reps and coaches opinions count as well.

If that's the case I don't know how anyone could think that Parnell has suddenly become the 3rd best RT in the NFL based on ALL of that.

all i can tell you is it wasn't too far ago where the vast majority of this board would have traded free for a bucket of 2 day old wal mart fried chicken. we (and i use the term loosely) hated this, felt he couldn't do that, and he was tied to the whipping post for several years by many fans. free since then took a pay cut and the furor died down cause his $ was more commensurate with his play. but however, most felt he was still average.

i'm not one to argue that. i think he's been solid at times, not at others, boiling down to a C+ type of player. however, in *this* OL he simply fits and it's working well. they play off each other and have together managed to become one of the best lines in the NFL. if someone were that much better than free i'd have to think we'd have kept him.

using the fact parnell got a stupid contract simply DOES NOT equate him to the better player. if it did, then Free must have been a hell of a player to get the contract he got that upset so many people. so the argument itself of $$$ for the contract is selective and takes a fraction of a second to try and justify an hour. it doesn't work that way despite the efforts to make it.

parnell got paid. great. he'll either move onto greatness and we can rue the day THEN, or he will prove the cowboys staff right and all this goes away in a few years.

You WANT Murray to go to Jacksonville?

Yes, he's been begging for it. 1800 yd RBs are a dime a dozen.

Maybe he doesn't know that Dallas has had exactly 3 1000yd seasons since Emmitt left and two of them are Murray in 2013-14.

I have always felt we needed an upgrade over Free, I just do not believe Parnell would have been a worth while upgrade. In my eye all things considered they are about equal tie going to the incumbent because parnell just does not have any football pedigree at all. The thing is in the current market to to get a significant you have to pay for it.
