And as we all know, huge contract = great player ...

you don't want it to be true. Clearly. I for example tend to give Xwalker the edge since he was very detailed in his breakdown on why he htought parnell was good. You just flap your gums about how he isn't.

I didn't say he isn't good. But don't let the truth get in the way of your hissy fit.

I said the Jags paid huge money for a good player, and I'm glad we didn't.

Sorry if you're butthurt about that, but you'll live. Just like he will. Just not as well as Parnell and those undeserved millions.

As I've said before, I would have kept Parnell for the same reasons Jacksonville signed him, but I think it's silly to say anyone was right on Parnell's development when we don't know if he'll develop beyond this point, which is good enough to be a starter but nothing more.

Actually XWalker was proven right when Parnell started and played fine at the end of the season and in the playoffs.

And its crazy to say this contract doesn't prove the NFL thinks Parnell is a good player. Derek Newton was an OK starter and got 10MM guaranteed, Parnell got more than that because he is already an OK starter and clearly has upside. If he wasn't the contract would have been less and happened later in the FA period.

Again, exceptions don't prove the rule. From what I've read today, signing Dez and Murray to big contracts would mean they are below average players.

The Parnell issue was about my belief that most fans don't really study game footage, especially not of players that don't have the ball in their hands.

I'll move on to somebody like Wilcox that fans underrate.

Anyone here knows that your Parnell stuff was based on tape and an honest assesstment that he was a little better than Free. I share that feeling and think Free has been over-rated and Parnell under-rated. With the two contracts completed I would have to say your viewpoint was more than vindicated.

Neither does paying great money to good players.

Both Dez and Murray each have Pro Bowl performance on his resume with tons of quality starts.

Where's Parnell's?

It proves the Jaguars think so, not the 'NFL'.

And if you want to take your insights from that organization...

The Jags made an offer based on competitive bidding. I'm sure it was high, but get back to me when they given Sterling Moore 13 Million guaranteed.

If there was any sort of 'competition', it wouldn't be over before the free agency period begins.

And why is it already over?

Because the Jags' offer is so ridiculously higher than anyone else's, Parnell and his agent have already agreed to it before they come to their senses.

I agree. I don't think Parnell is a bad player but he is a 29 year old player who has been in the league since 2009 and has a total of 7 games starting clearly over paying on this deal.

I do not doubt that Parnell has a high ceiling, I have always doubted he would reach it to be beneficial. In essence he has been at the same level for 3 seasons Free has been slightly better consistently which you would expect from a veteran starting OT, Parnell has failed to take the next step up. I could be wrong and he becomes a pro bowler but right now he is at some sort of glass ceiling, successful teams just do not continue to pour resources into a back up/fringe starter has been in the league 6 years and has been at a plateau for 3.

Clearly. And, again, if the money the Jags offered wasn't so much higher than everyone else, he'd still be soliciting offers when free agency actually starts.

They jumped on this crazy deal before the ink was dry.

From a bottom-feeder team desperate to get anybody to take their money.

Just wait until you see the ridiculous money they overpay next for a TE that Peyton Manning made.

You have no idea what other offers Parnell had, only that he took this one. Its common sense that this was the high offer but its also common sense that it isn't that much higher than the others. No one is offering Sterling Moore a big contract while no one else is, and no one is offering Parnell dramatically more than the market rate he got in talking to other teams. There was plenty of press articles saying multiple teams were going to bid on Parnell.

And if the timing of the offer shows it was exorbitant, then why isn't that true for Doug Free's contract? He signed before free agency began, why isn't his contract an overpayment by (noted drunken sailor) Jerry Jones?

Various:
Parnell is a solid player and he was paid well beyond his worth but that is how FA works.
Issue is he was never coming back here because he was goign to go to the highest bidder.
DALLAS didn't rate Parnell ahead of Free.
A lot of that has ZERO to do with tape.

Good for both Free and Parnell, each achieved their primary goal.
Free got to remain as the OL captain and RT.
Parnell got to lock in his financial security.

It all happened as it was supposed to.

6.5m is hardly great money. He was getting that from someone.

Newsflash amigo, neither do you! And we never will so it's useless to argue about! There's no 'common sense' about it either way.

No one is offering Sterling Moore a big contract while no one else is, and no one is offering Parnell dramatically more than the market rate he got in talking to other teams. There was plenty of press articles saying multiple teams were going to bid on Parnell.

And yet, here we are before free agency has even started and the big 'competition' and huge 'bidding war' is already over. And you know why? Because the Jaguars' offer was so much higher than everyone else's that it was a TKO before the 'fight' ever started. And Parnell and his agent jumped on it as fast as they could, before the Jaguars realized what they were doing.

And if the timing of the offer shows it was exorbitant, then why isn't that true for Doug Free's contract? He signed before free agency began, why isn't his contract an overpayment by (noted drunken sailor) Jerry Jones?

Look no further than the contract years, total numbers, and guarantees.

If you want to rue the loss of Jermey (sic) Parnell, feel free. I'll instead choose to praise the retention of Doug Free.

And this is coming from someone who wanted Free gone a few years ago. He's turned it around and developed into a consistent player and leader and I'm happy to have him back, especially on those terms.
