NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, league sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.

Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.

The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone.

The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.

Goodell is expected to have a decision no later than Friday but that is not set in stone.

The league refused comment but did confirm Monday that they were reviewing a possible violation by the Patriots.

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

They should make NE forfeit the game against the Jets. I know they will not do that but the way I see if a team knowing is cheating to win a game that win should be taken away from them.

Why cheat, i can understand trying to hear the defense calling plays but to actually have a camera man pointing at their coaches all game is beyond gamesmanship but flat out horrible for the game....

I say they sit Brady for 6 weeks as punishment.

We'd see how genius Beli is without his star QB(and his video-taped signals).

Prepare the Barry Bondseaque treatment by opposing crowds, "When we win we do it by ourselves." "Is Joe Cocker on the Patriot staff cuz they get by with a little help from their friends".

All the more reason to poo poo this decade's "dynasty" they won by field goals and behaved like George Allen.

As punishment, they should allow a Jet's personel to stand on the Patriots sideline with a radio.

I've said it before and I'll say it again here: Lose their #1 pick in the next draft and give the Jets the win. That would be fair.

I'd like to see multiple draft picks (including the #1 and their other #1) pluse lose the game. It would serve them right for cheating in what is a multi-million dollar business... not to mention the millions of dollars that are bet on the outcome of the games. Las Vegas goes to great lengths to set the point spreads and NE was screwing it up with that unfair advantage.

Knowing what defense was coming. Heck, no wonder Brady has looked so good.

I agree 100%!! The appropriate punishment is a forfeit.

I bet they lose a draft pick or 2.
I wonder how high. Which is worse for the NFL? Cheating? Or thugism?

Edit: They still have two first rounders don't they?

That's what's striking. If this is the third time they've been caught doing this, there's no telling what else they've been cheating on.

Two #1s next year. Might be waving bye-bye to one of them.
They should forfeit both as an example, Goodell will be the no-nonsense commisioner, for crying out loud Wade Wilson was treating his own diabetes and ED with drugs that couldn't possibly give he nor his team a competitive edge since he doesn't play and is sitting at home for five games.

The Pats should be forced to forfeit the first round all together and be put on a probationary status meaning if it happens again there will be games forfeited.

A death penalty rule should exist not unlike what happened to SMU a decade ago.

ive heard many people talk about and complain that it seemed the defense was aware of what was being run presnap. belichek has been touted as a top notch coach but i would imagine its pretty easy to call plays when you know exactly what your opponent is running.

This is pretty damning if they are trying to not only compromise defensive signals but also intercept offensive signals.
